Emory or UT Plan 2!!! Helppppppppppp

Hi everyone,

I live in Texas and have been accepted at Emory and UT-Austin Plan 2 Honors. I never thought I would have money to go to Emory, but the financial aid they gave me actually makes it about $1000 cheaper than UT .

By the way if you guys don't know about Plan 2 it's a very selective honors program at UT-Austin that has only about 150 kids. Their website has previous students getting into prestigious Med. schools like Harvard, Baylor, Yale, etc.

I want to go to Med school.
So should i go to Emory or Plan2.

I would appreciate any thoughts on what you guys would do in my situation.

i would go to UT. i would pick being a highly honored student in a less prestigious school with lots of special privileges with an almost guaranteed spot in med school over a better name school anyday.

being the top in your class looks better than being at the bottom of a better class. works for high schoolers applying to college and as far as i know, works for college students applying to graduate schools

It depends on how you feel about the atmosphere. Austin and Atlanta are very different. The size of the schools is very different. I would go with Emory to experience life outside of Texas for awhile. Plan II is excellent, but, on the whole, you will have more "like minded peers" at Emory. Oh-also depends on how much you care about sports teams. UT rules on that one.

i think you should do plan II at ut austin. what cookiemonster says is true. i think you'll have better opportunity. plus, if you live in texas, you'll be close to home if you need to go. austin is way better than atlanta, i think, and their football team is great. there's no school spirit at emory. you'll have much better opportunities to get into a good med school. i think it will just be better for you all around.

i think you should go to UT. i am also from texas, and it is highly prestigious to do plan 2, and you will be guaranteed a good med school! while emory is overall more prestigious, ut plan 2 is an excellent, first rate education, whereas emory's academics aren't overall stellar.

Thanks for all your guys' input. I'm kinda leaning towards emory because i talked to my friend who goes to emory and he told me that their pre-med program is one of the top ones in the nation but I'm going to a plan 2 session tonight also just to make sure i explore all of my options.

Most of my counselors have been telling me emory is the better option.

    AHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...

i have friends who have graduated from both schools, and the one who graduated from plan II got into harvard med school. i have a friend at emory med school and she hates it. just htought i'd put in my 2 cents

i'd be interested in seeing how your ut plan 2 session goes. personally, i got rejected from ut plan 2, and if i had gotten in, i would kick myself for not going there. its more selective than emory is. i am proof of that, because here i am a future emory student. i would have loved to have the ivy league education and be in the wonderful city of austin where i was born and raised!! austin is an amazing city. you really should think about it before passing it up for emory. although dont get me wrong im still excited to go to emory because its an amazing school...im just saying that that UT spot could have been mine lol if u pass it up...

Go to UT Plan II. It is an amazing program and for your goals it seems more appropriate.

I'd go to Emory. Having the name "Emory" on your resume is a big deal.

    Emory=bigger name + cheaper education=right choice

I think UT plan II is more selective/prestigous/whatever you wanna call it. But, if you like the Emory environment more, you should go with that because you want to go to the best place for you.

    vtoodler:
having a good name doesn't mean anything. and even if it did, plan II is just as good as emory when it comes down to it. having plan 2 on your resume is just as impressive as emory, if not moreso. it's harder to get into plan 2 if i'm not mistaken. i think the environment is better, too. austin is just such a diverse and ecclectic place... ut is not as clique-ish as emory is, either. i think it'd be better at ut than emory.

"plan II is just as good as emory when it comes down to it."

If plan 2 is just as impressive as Emory, then wouldn't it make more sense for him to go to Emory because Emory is $1000 cheaper?

i agree with laxchic. and $1,000 isnt that big of a difference. in this case, it shouldnt really be a factor, because either way hes getting a good deal. plan 2 is like getting an ivy education at a public school price, and he has good financial aid provided for him at emory. factors to consider are his major, which if he really wants to do medicine, plan 2 would be much better, plus what type of environment he wants: austin versus atlanta. both are nice cities, i just personally prefer austin. so better city plus better for the major plus more selectivity plus basically the same amount of money and just as much prestige...= i would choose plan 2 in a heartbeat.

maybe so, vtoodler, but my point was that he shouldn't decide on where to go simply based on the name of the institution. the only thing i was trying to say was that name recognition is not as important anymore as it used to be, and you have better chances for med school at ut. in that case, it would be worth it to spend the $1000.
