Wayne State Merit Scholarship 1500 SAT 4.8 gpa

GimmeMoneyGimmeMoney 6 replies1 threads New Member
Hey guys, made an account just cuz I'm nearing college and i have a couple of questions. My major one being what my chances are for getting full tuition or close to it for Wayne State. my fam isn't poor or anything but it would be great to get some $ so i won't get depression. I go to an IB school in Anna arbor (washtenaw international) and I am currently a junior.
Stats:
3.98 cumulative unweighted gpa, 4.8something weighted gpa this year. (IB starts junior year so no weight for previous years :/)
1500 sat
NHS, 2 service clubs with a leadership position, Spanish NHS, Science olympiad state competitor, and i run cross country and soccer :P (i'm decent, not great)

I really want $ so my parents don't have a massive burden over their head. Wayne state is my top choice and im applying for med direct, obviously if i get into that i won't have to worry about $ as it is all payed for. but if i don't get in, which i probably won't seeing that i am not socioeconomically disadvantaged, scholarships for regular undergrad would be great.
Thanks!

Wayne State has a very good scholarship site. Here is information on freshman scholarships: https://wayne.edu/scholarships/freshmen/ . They do award some scholarships on merit without regard to need. Did yuo apply to the Honors College? It's a good idea to do that.

This is my Ala mater. You will get money if you keep up your grades. You should talk to admission /financial aid to get more information.

Talk to Admissions. At WSU the Admissions staff handles scholarship information for incoming students. I’m not sure what is available, if anything, full tuition ... but someone in Admissions can answer your question.

The most you may get from Wayne is probably $6,000 a year (Warrior Scholarship). I have not heard of anyone getting a full ride there, especially without need. My daughter's friend applied there with a perfect ACT and he was offered the same $6,000 that my 34 ACT daughter was offered from the school. There must have been another $1000 for being offered a spot in the honor's college because I know my daughter was going to get $7,000 a year there. There is a scholarship competition that you have to be invited to. Are you set up to attend that yet? My daughter picked U of M, they gave her more money.

The President's Award is $12,000/year + $5,000/year toward on campus housing ... plus study abroad funding.

WSU is $384.74/credit hour for lower division & $456.58/credit hour for upper division this year. The $12,000 scholarship comes pretty darn close to funding tuition.

My niece got the $6,000 award with much lower stats then yours. I would think you have a great shot at the one @kelsmom is speaking of. Good luck.

Looks like you might get the big award, but that’s only a “might.”

What was your psat? Maybe you’ll be a NMF and get large merit elsewhere. Must it be Wayne state?

What is your major and career goal?

Can your family contribute any costs at all?

By the way... the word is “paid,” ....not “payed.” :)

@mom2collegekids got me thinking ... have you looked at Oakland U? https://www.oakland.edu/futurestudents/scholarships-cost-aid/ . You'd qualify for guaranteed full tuition with your stats. Here is a link to their financial aid/scholarship handbook: https://www.oakland.edu/Assets/Oakland/futurestudents/files-and-documents/pdf/ADM-18524_FinancialAidBook_FINAL_REVISED_9.18.18.pdf .

My S graduated from OU, and he got a good education. He was a biology major, and a number of classmates who applied for med/pharm school & got in. Class sizes are good, the campus isn't too huge.

I realize you want Med Direct, but 1) you might not get it, and 2) if you get it but don't get a large enough scholarship, you need to consider that med school costs a lot ... you might want to think about the value of a free undergraduate education.

med direct actually takes care of all the expenses for both undergrad and med school, which is why i prefer it. As far as OU, I'm not acquainted to its stats or college experience, but i would prefer wayne nonetheless. Thanks for your reply!

@kelsmom that is actually the scholarship i was inquiring about, because on their website the only qualifications it talks about is being a national merit finalist, which i am not. Hopefully my merits alone can get me the scholarship, and i will talk to admissions and my councilor to clear up some questions. Thanks for your reply!
