Were you awarded Work Study? If it's part of your financial aid package you can apply for WS jobs. If not, apply for non-WS jobs.

If you don't qualify for subsidized loans I don't know if you're eligible for WS. Have you asked your financial aid office? What does the FAFSA.gov website say about WS eligibility?

Depending on your university you should be able to get a job. It shouldn't really make a difference if work study or not. Heed the advise above.

Federal work study is a need based financial aid award. You have to have financial need to get it. In addition, federal work study monies are limited funds per college and are awarded on a first come first served basis. It’s probable that the school has already allocated work study funds to the students who applied earlier. This FAFSA was available on October 1, 2018...those who applied nearer to that date and had need probably got the money.

If the only reason you file the FAFSA is to get an unsubsidized Direct Loan, you probably don’t have calculated financial need....right?

Look for a job that is not work study.

Your Mom won’t let you get a job? And you don’t know your FAFSA status which you had to sign? Sounds to me like it is time to be an adult and take charge of your education!

My mom won’t let me get a job outside the university.

Most colleges do offer non-work study jobs as well, in areas such as cafeteria/barista/food service, athletic department, art museum, library, mailroom and more.

Depending on your university's location though, students may be able to make more money at off-campus jobs, e.g., nannying/babysitting, restaurant waitstaff...perhaps the opportunity to make more money would resonate with your mom. Good luck.

There are jobs IN the university that are not funded by work study money.

Try the dining hall and the call center. Where my kids went to school, there were usually job openings, and they were not all funded by work study funds.

Getting a job also puts work experience on your resume, and that’s never a bad thing.

If you've been in college for 5 years already you must be ~23-years-old. Why doesn't your mom want you to work off campus? Albany has a bus system. I think getting a job after graduation will be easier if you have a work history and references.

There are usually non-WS jobs on campus. You could look for one of those. Are you working now? You can earn spending money over the summer.

@kelsmom will know if students who only qualify for the unsubsidized loan can get Work Study. I don't know how long you're eligible for them. I think Pell is only available for 6 years. If the loans work the same way you may have to get a job to cover the remaining expenses.

if students who only qualify for the unsubsidized loan can get Work Study

The only way to know is to know if the student has financial NEED. For colleges that don’t meet full need, it’s possible, I suppose, that only the unsubsidized Loan would be offered.

My first kid had no financial need. He was not eligible for federal work study. There was a WS job on his campus that he was very well qualified for, and he applied. He was told the finding was for work study students only...oh well. The job actually went unfilled...it required a certain skill set...and no one with work study applied for it.

My son got a job outside of work study just because he looked up opportunities on the Michigan work site. Had an "on campus" job of his liking in less then 10 minutes. I assume other schools have something similar. Time to educate mom 😉.
Same for my daughter, she transferred to a new small lac school. Wanted a way to meet people and for some reason "always" wanted to be a barista. So she got an on campus job making coffee at one of the schools cafe's
She loves it and BTW met tons of people, some turned into good friends.

Too late to edit...my kid who didn’t get a work study award found an even better off campus job! It paid well, and the employer hired lots of students in the same major...and was very accommodating with schedules.

Oh...and the supervisor wrote a great letter of reference for the kid too.

Both my kids got non WS jobs at school. One worked as a receptionist for the dept he was majoring in, the other worked for the athletic dept helping out at various sporting events. The secret to getting the best jobs is to apply early. My S got his job by looking at online board the college had for advertising jobs, found a few he liked and before classes started my S went in person to apply. My D got her job through friends.

Not eligible for work study if no subsidized loan. But the advice about alternatives is great.
