How to get Parent Plus loan for 2020 summer school

dadfor2014dadfor2014 621 replies56 threads Member
My daughter planning to take 6 hrs this summer. she will be senior fall 2020. I was wondering if I can use fafsa to take out the summer loan, like Parent Plus loan or can the student apply on her own.
I already got 2019-2020 loan through Parent Plus. We dont get any Perl grants due to income we have.

    Is summer 2020 part of the 2020-2021 academic year, or part of the 2019-2020 academic year?

    Find that out first.

    Once you know, you must complete the FAFSA for that year to be eligible for parents to take the Parent Plus Loan.

    Your daughter cannot apply for a Parent Plus Loan...you parents apply for that. It’s a parent loan.

    The Parent Plus cannot exceed the cost of attendance. What I don’t know is how summer is included.

    @kelsmom?

    I guess I have to ask...why does she need to take summer courses as opposed to working?

    Summer is part of 2019-2020. She need to retake 1 class to improve her Grade and the 2nd class goes with 1st class need to be taken together.
    I did went into FAFSA and apply again for period 5/20 - 8/20.
    They accepted the application and send it to School now. Lets see what School will do.

    she normally volunteer in hospital during regular semesters and in summer.

    You have been applying for Parent Plus Loans since 2014. Is there some reason you think the process has changed?

    I would suggest that if you have a question for this college...pick up the phone and call the financial aid office. I’m quite sure they will be able to answer your question.

    I never applied for summer loan before so that's why not clear how to proceed.
    My daughter talk to financial in school and she told me they were not helpful at all and told her she will not get any loans from school and she should go private loans or talk to fafsa or pay herself.. School did say fafsa wont give her or parent more then few hundreds $$. I think COA is for full year not including summer.

    As long as she is enrolled at least half time for summer, you will be able to request a summer PLUS loan. A summer budget will be added to her financial aid, making her eligible for up to the summer COA in the summer session. She should contact her financial aid office for application instructions.

    Thanks @kelsmom .

    So that summer PLUS loan will be in her name or the Parent PLUS loan..

    It’s parent PLUS. The student should find out how to request summer aid, though.

    It is also possible that she might be able to qualify for a $1,000-2,000 direct loan herself ... if she advanced from freshman to sophomore or sophomore to junior standing & is therefore eligible for a loan increase. She would want to make sure that doing so won’t reduce her loan eligibility for the following fall/spring, though.

    She is finishing Junior in May 2020. Will be Senior for 2020-2021 and that loan is already applied and approved for. You are right her own loans limit increases in junior and Senior year.. If we cant get it either way then I will just pay myself.

    Once more...a Parent Plus Loan is a Parent Loan, not a student loan. Your daughter cannot apply for a Parent Plus Loan at all. That is something you have to do.

    If she has any Direct Loan money not already used for 2019-2020 (since you said summer is part of that academic year), she could get that balance if Direct Loan money...but it sounds like she used all of that during the regular 2019-2020 academic year.

    Does she have a job? Can she earn the money for these two summer courses?

    I will check with her if any money left from 2019-2020 loans she got in her name.
    She is full time student and do volunteer work in her spare time. She not working at all.

    Kids volunteer and work in college if they need to.

    Why is this student retaking a course? Did she fail it?

    Could she take an extra class in her last two semesters instead of in the summer?

    @dadfor2014

    Could you answer the questions in these recent posts?

    She did not fail the class but she think she need to get a better grade (Org Chem). Her schedule is too full in senior year for her to add more classes.
    She is pre-med. She will take a Gap year after graduation and will work then to payoff some of her loans.

    @dadfor2014

    She needs to talk to the medical school advisor at her college. IIRC, allopathic medical schools do NOT allow for grade substitution even if her college does. Both grades are required to be reported.

    And I think many DO schools have also adopted this policy now.

    What was her grade in OChem? This repeat might not be a good use of her time...or money.

    @WayOutWestMom can you elaborate?

    Has she ever had a paying job? How is she going to earn enough to pay of $27,000+ of loans in one year?

    It would be nice if my S could take some summer classes to lighten his credit load.

    But it costs $3,000 for 6 credits for tuition and fees and we don't have that extra money.

    So he is taking 18 credits a semester.

    His sister also didn't take summer classes. She didn't need to because she had AP credits.

    They both work in the summer.
