Most Valuable Student Scholarship

Has anyone heard of this scholarship that the Elks organization gives out? It is apparently a national schoalrship program. D has been on fastweb applying here there and everywhere for scholarships. I wonder if there is any validity to the statement that students accumulate the most scholarship money their freshman year and then it declines significantly. Is that because so many of them are 1 yr/nonrenewable scholarships? I guess fastweb will be her firend for 4 yrs...............

It is important to determine all the conditions when researching scholarships. This includes renewable or not and conditions such as minimum GPA to be maintained. Some, such as Target are for 1 year only, others such as Elks and Coca Cola are for 4 years. This is from personal experience as my kids have received the Target, Elks and Coca Cola along with school scholarships and local scholarships. Some school scholarships automatically renew (some with quite high minimum GPAs others just require the student to be passing); others are for a set number of years ( 1 - 4) and may require reapplication each year. Know in advance so you don't get surprised later.

My D won our local MVS thur Elks - apparently she advanced thru districts so I think now it moves to state. She received $1500 locally (one-time) - I think these awards vary from lodge to lodge.

I too worry about the one-time scholarships. No doubt, I'm glad to have any of them. But guess you do have to think past year 1 when you're thinking about financing. In other words, know that the cushion of those one-year $$ won't necessarily be there...

Yes ~ I realize that some if not many are nonrenewable or contingent upon certain requirements. I think that is why students may be awarded the most money their freshman year. I think is important for kids to continue to pursue scholarships all 4 yrs because of the nonrenewable awards.

How many districts etc does one have to go thru for the Elks before it then goes on to the state level. It didn't really say if I recall. Is this a scholarship program that many kids apply for? It looked fairly time consuming and required lots of materials to be gathered and in a certain order not to mention in a certain kind of folder. My D who is a junior may apply next year so any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
