is there any way to find out what you "efc" is according to this; or do we just have to wait until the college tells us?

That confused me first time around. The school's financial aid office interprets the profile data and makes an individual decision. There is no automatic EFC type number that "magically" appears when you hit submit.

You can estimate the efc that might be plausible from CSS Profile using the "Institutional Methodology" at the College Board's financial aid calculator.

However, each college is free to ignore the efc produced by FAFSA, the CSS Profile, or whatever, and use its own formula.
