IMPORTANT: Links to AUTOMATIC/GUARANTEED Merit Scholarships

edited November 2013 in Financial Aid & Scholarships
This thread is designed to cut through all of the clutter and get right to colleges that provide non-competitive, guaranteed, automatic merit scholarship money. PLEASE do not list any scholarships which are not GUARANTEED. Please provide the name of the college, the tuition cost, and the link to where one might calculate, based on GPA and SAT/ACT and class rank (or other attributes) the amount of money the student would get.

PLEASE keep this focused to automatic scholarships based on merit. PLEASE do not enter posts like:

"I hear that XX College is generous..."
"Several students a year get ...."
"Private colleges give better aid..."
"My daughter got a great scholarship from...."

Here is an example:

Ohio University

Approximate costs:

Tuition: In-state: $9,000; OOS: $18,000;
Other costs(Room/Board/etc): $10,000

Link to merit scholarship calculator:
The Gateway Award Program: Ohio University Admissions

Details
This is a bit confusing because OU separates the tuition into a state tuition and and OOS supplement. An OOS student pays both. The merit awards are split up that was also.
The portion of the "in-state" amount you get ("Gateway Award") depends on your stats. The OOS portion ("Gateway Trustee Award") is the same ($6000) for all students with a 3.0 GPA and ACT equal to and higher than 25 or SAT equal to or higher than 1130 (Math+CR).

Examples:
1. An OOS student applying with a GPA of 3.6 and an ACT of 32 would get a scholarship for the equiv of full in-state tuition (approx $9,000) and another $6000 for the OOS supplement (Total over 4 years: $60,000 in scholarship money). That would bring the annual tuition cost down to approximately $3,000 per year.

2. An OOS student with an SAT score of 1320 (and a GPA greater than 3.0) would get $2000 towards the in-state part and $6000 towards the OOS part, or $8,000 per year (Total over 4 years: $32,000). That would bring the annual tuition down to about $10,000 per year for OOS.

It's also a good idea to include deadlines....Bama's priority deadline is Dec 1st.

Alabama also gives additional automatic scholarships to those who major in Engineering or Computer Science. These scholarships "stack" on top of the university scholarships. See link

College of Engineering - Scholarship Information

    For example...College of Engineering - Out-of-State scholarships:

    * Students who have a 27-29 ACT or 1210-1320 SAT (math and verbal scores only) and at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA will receive $1,500 per year for four years.

    * Students who have a 30-31 ACT or 1330-1390 SAT (math and verbal scores only) and at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA will receive a tuition supplement to bring their University-level scholarship offer up to the value of tuition. In addition, they will receive $2,500 per year for four years.

    * Students who have a 32-36 ACT or 1400-1600 SAT (math and verbal scores only) and at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA will receive $2,500 per year for four years.

Everyone needs to keep in mind that these are the scholarships offered for the Fall 2010 freshman class.

Colleges often change, reduce, eliminate scholarships around late spring/summer for the next round of applicants. For instance, this year, Arizona St reduced their scholarships. So, use the info here as just possible automatic scholarships.

    Along that vein...

The IU automatic scholarships mentioned are "done" for this year (there is a notice at this point that they preferred Nov 1 priority but they cut off these automatic scholarships listed above for any applications that weren't received by Dec 1). So if you're looking for 2011...these MIGHT apply next year but they're done for this year (the school is currently cutting $59 million..who knows what 2011 will bring for ANY university).

    ^^^

    For example....Purdue...

    Trustees and Presidential Scholarships
Admitted students who meet the academic criteria for these awards will receive them automatically if they complete their admission application by November 15. Students who meet the application deadline may submit new SAT or ACT test scores for scholarship consideration until January 1, 2010. New scores must be sent electronically from the testing agency. Only domestic students are eligible for the Trustees and Presidential scholarships.

    Trustees Scholarship
Value: Up to $10,000 per year for out-of-state students; up to $8,000 per year for Indiana residents
Criteria: Core GPA of 3.8 on 4.0 scale plus an SAT of 2000 or higher or a score of 30 or higher on both the ACT composite and ACT combined English/writing. The scholarship is renewable.*

    Presidential Scholarship
Value: Up to $7,000 per year for out-of-state students; up to $5,000 per year for Indiana residents
Criteria: Core GPA of 3.8 on 4.0 scale plus an SAT of 1850-1990 or an ACT composite of 27-29 and an ACT combined English/writing of 27-29. The scholarship is renewable.*

However, I do wonder what they mean by "up to". Do you have to have the highest end of the range to get the "up to" amount? Anyone know?

BTW....we should also probably include Out of State (OOS) and instate full COAs so that the scholarship amounts are meaningful....

Be sure that COA includes books, personal, travel, in addition to tuition, fees, room, and board. If the COA page only includes tuition, fees, room and board, you should probably add an additional $3-4k for books, personal, and travel. Right?

Or...maybe include links to the COA pages??? (Warning...some colleges list COAs in terms of semesters or quarters, so be sure to figure "per year" costs)

^^Actually, Marist does not have "automatic" scholarships. They are made at the discretion of the scholarship committee.

Bumping for a poster who asked about this thread...

I hope more people add to this thread because it's good for several reasons.

    1) for those who have high EFCs that are unaffordable

    2) for those who might have the money for undergrad, but would rather save it for med/law/business school, etc.

    3) for those who can only afford their local state school, but would like to go out of state (OOS).

Surely there are more schools to add to this list....

BTW....be sure to note which is the last testing date is accepted. Some schools don't take testing scores from tests later than October or November. And, some/many do not use superscores for merit scholarships.

When applying to any of these schools, be sure to note what the latest test dates are acceptable for scholarship consideration. Some schools stipulate that the last tests for consideration are in October or Nov of senior year.
