My son is a freshman at GT with the same stats. We are in state. He was admitted early action and is having a great year! I think your son is in excellent shape!

Thank you! Also forgot to include he’s a National Merit Semi-finalist. Crossing fingers! 🤞

From what I understand colleges really don’t care about the semi finalist status (unless they give merit for it). They are much more interested on your performance on the SAT and or ACT. Because your son has excellent scores on both and they are consistent that is very good. Did he take any SAT II subject tests? Not required by Georgia Tech but I do think they are helpful. My son had strong scores on those as well and submitted them. Georgia Tech is not a safety for anyone even in state, but I do think your son will hear good news in January :-)

Thanks so much :) He did not take the subject tests. I wish he would have. He’s very gifted in math (jumped 3 grades up starting in 3rd grade - he went to a charter school). Perfect scores on the math sections. I’m just worried that his previous two rejections will hurt him. Otherwise I would not be terribly worried. Looking forward to January! Thanks for replying!

We did the admissions presentation and tour recently and the AO said a couple of things that might help:

    - They don't look at SAT 2's unless there is a reason like the applicant didn't take Calc. People asked follow up questions and he was very clear about this.
    - He said the first thing they look for is did the student take the most challenging math available to them. Basically, AP Calc BC or IB HL if available in the school. If not available they look to see that the student can handle GT math.
    - He said they look at GPA and rigor more than test scores but both are important. Something about 4 years of work tells them more about you.
    - Finally they like to see something outside the classroom that shows you are more than a calculator.

He is not V or S. Our school doesn’t rank anymore except those two (this is new). He completed BC calc in 10th grade. He has taken every rigorous course at school that he could (AP Physics C, AP Stats, etc.). His brother took same exact 11 APs and got in at Tech (he did Distance Math in 11th grade).

On paper, he looks good I think. Again, I’m so worried his previous Distance Math rejections will hurt him. 😑 The only difference btwn when he applied to DM and now are: his higher ACT score (34 to 35), SAT score (1510 to 1590), became president of marching band, and became a National Merit SF. Of course, more AP courses were picked up over those two years.

GT is his dream school and as a mom, would be SO nice if both my kids attended same school. Just easier I guess. Thanks so much for your time!!!

I doubt the application to Distance Math is even a consideration for regular acceptance. My son was on the same math track; AP BC in 10th and then did DE MV Calc and Linear Algebra in 11th and DiffEQ in 12th. He had a much lower SAT (mostly all in the Verbal section), similar GPA (3.98 uw), and a total of 14 AP/DE level classes. He was accepted last year from OOS. I would be surprised if your son was not accepted in-state.

Thanks to all for your replies and time! I will post back mid-January 😁 He’s actually a little excited about the UGA Honor’s program. He would qualify for a couple nice scholarships. At Tech the scholarships are sparse and you’re in competition with every single smart kid there (everyone!). Thank you!
