USC EEMS with thesis option

Hi, I was admitted to USC's EEMS program (at first I applied to their Ph.D program but was turned down) and needed some advice on how best to prepare for a Ph.D. program during my master study.

I understand that it is best to do research during my master study as preparation (since I did not have stellar GPA in undergrad); however, based on the information I gathered about USC's master program, there does not seem to have many opportunities for master students to do research.

How difficult is it for master students to seek research opportunities (in particular in USC)? And how should I approach the professor?
