    34 ACT
SAT 800M 650CR 510W(probably what killed him along with 3.2 GPA (UW) and D in English comp in Jr year)
can't recall exact SAT subject test scores but both were over 700 - MathII and Physics
excellent EC's - honors and awards in both academics and music & theater
and at least one excellent teacher rec (probably 2)

theorymom- Grinnell says that 50% of the decision is based on the HS performance- The 3.2 & D in English probably did cause deny. Only 25% of the decision is based on SAT/ACT. Plus almost 4000 applications for 385 spots- VERY COMPETITIVE YEAR.

They only had a 100 or so more apps then last year
  • rpo272rpo272 Registered User Posts: 150 Junior Member
They actually had 88 less apps from what the thread on admission data reported. But the acceptance rate fell 9% which is quite significant.

well an article i read in the nytimes said that grinnell was taking 10% more applicants this year, so idk what happened: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/08/education/08yield.html?em

Re-read the NYTimes article. The quote does not come from anyone at Grinnell.

Out of curiosity, you guys who are getting merit aid, are you not eligible for need based aid? Just wondering if they tend to just give merit OR need based.

According to the Common Data Set, of this year's first year class (464 students), 388 applied for need-based aid. 318 got need-based aid and 48 of these students also got merit aid. Of those not receiving need-based aid, 93 received merit aid.

I believe there is information on Grinnell's website about how it works when you get both need-based aid and merit aid.

i only got merit aid (and only a small amount). although i applied for need based aid i didn't end up qualifying for it.

Thanks Dairy State K8! I didn't see that on the site, I'll go and have another look.

I got both merit aid and need based aid, but I had a pretty low EFC.
