Same profile as other accepted students - does this hurt my chances?!

I’m applying to Harvard, where two kids from my school have gotten in in previous years. Notably, we’ve all been engaged in activism, interested in going into government and law, and president of the same club. The boy who got in last year deferred his admission so he’s going to be in the same class I am applying for. Since they’ve admitted kids from my school with a similar profile, is that bad for my chances?

Assuming similar stats and status (legacy, donor, URM, etc.) it is probably a good thing.

Whether it is or isn't- what exactly are you going to do about it? Decide you want to become a marine biologist instead? Write about your passion for Classical archaeology?

I was just asking in an attempt to better understand my chances.

I don't think it will matter. Each college tries to build a class and might not care which high school the activists are coming from. Apply, give it your best shot, and recognize that the odds are long for any Ivy League school and that you should build a balanced college list that includes target and safety schools that you'd be happy to attend. Good luck!
