no football team?

i am currently deciding between a few schools in the final stretch before may 1st and i am very confused about college decisions! i am really just trying to find out more about every aspect of the schools now, and recently as I was comparing them i was wondering: i know that Haverford does not have a football team (which is not a specific concern of mine) and that about 40% of the student body is involved in athletics, but when i visited it did not seem like the school had too much school spirit and pride in their school, like larger schools have i guess. i was just wondering if there were any major events or important school activities (such as a large football game in other schools) that incite school spirit and bring the school together as a whole? any comments, insight, etc. are extremely welcome! thanks!

Hmmm... well, there's Plenary where the students get together and re-ratify the Honor Code.

/\ uh, do you want people to think we're even bigger freaks than we already are? :)

I think the dynamics of the whole "school spirit thing" is different at a small school than at a larger one... it's not as obvious but just manifested in its own quirky way.

Big events would be Custom's, Haverfest, BMC's May Day.
HC is somewhat low key so big pep rallies and banners are not the style of the school.

    I'll show y'all school spirit...

    Gimme a G
    Gimme an O
    Gimme an H
    Gimme an A
    Gimme a V
    Gimme an E
    Gimme an R
    Gimme an F
    Gimme another O
    Gimme another R
    Gimme a D

    What does it spell?

I agree with HC Alum. At virtually all LACs, school spirit just looks different. Generally, it manifests itself in support and encouragement in a whole range of activities that peers are involved in (not just showing up for one major sport), people working cooperatively on projects, etc.

You could get a taste of it at some schools about once per year, I know at Williams and Amherst they make a big deal out of the football game. For Haverford and Swarthmore, there is the basketball game. But it certainly won’t be Duke basketball, Notre Dame football, etc. While students may not gather collectively to cheer for sports, I think students at the College are extraordinarily happy and proud of the school.
