HELP!! Socialization problems..

So I'm an international student at college now and I'm really stressed about socialization. I didn't hang out with friends a lot at high school, and since college I've forced myself to socialize. But I'm not enjoying it. I do want to meet more people and know about them, but I realized that a lot of people even don't know my existence after the first term (our college is really small so mostly people know all of students in their class). Another problem is that after the first term, I'm afraid that some people (mostly those I've never talked to) have categorized me into those who are unpopular and weird, so how am I suppose to start conversations with them and change the situation? And sometimes I just don't know how to express myself, because of language barrier my English sounds weird...

Any advice is welcomed... THANK YOU!!!
