Is there AVID at your school? What's it like?

Just curious because the program seems to vary. I've heard people say that it's for below average kids who wouldn't get into college otherwise, which is a lot different from the one we have at our school. First of it's pretty hard to get into, with two thirds of incoming freshmen (usually high hundreds) applying to a 30 spot classroom and some years being heavily composed of top students. In a class there's usually not many kids who really "need" the program

At my school it's for people who need help getting into college and it's recommended for first-generation college students.
There were maybe 50 9th grade AVID students out of 960.

My school has it, but I'm not in it. It just helps kids prepare for college or something like that and sometimes they go on college visits. My friends who are in it say that it's really fun though.

I'm not in it either. Is AVID only in California?

According to Wikipedia (which I know isn't always accurate), it's in 45 of the 50 states, DC, and 16 other countries. But until I looked it up, I'd never heard of it, as my high school doesn't have it (to my knowledge, anyway).

No AVID in my school, though I heard about it before.
