What AP classes are necessary and unnecessary to Get into UofM for a Bio Chemistry Major

user_80637user_80637 0 replies1 threads New Member
I really want to know what classes i should take in order to guarantee a scholarship to UofM for Biochem major and then Med-School. I am a freshmen who is planning on taking APUSH and AP Bio sophomore year. AP lang, AP World History, and AP Chem in Junior Year, AP Calc BC, AP Lit, AP Physics, and possibly AP Psych senior year. Are these all Necessary? and are there some i dont need to take?

No AP courses are necessary. UofM (Mississippi) just uses your HS GPA and ACT or SAT score (assuming that you complete the specified HS courses, which do not necessarily have to be AP) to give frosh scholarships.

Medical school admission is not guaranteed; you need high college GPA and MCAT score, pre-med extracurriculars, and other application items like essays, recommendations, and interview that will impress the medical schools (all of which will be reaches).

I'd say you should probably have an AP physics in there too.

For the humanities aps, if you don't really want to take them then don't

AP Physics is in the original post.

But I strongly disagree that anyone "should" have all three science AP courses. It's way out of the ordinary.

The issue isn't what you need to get in (for that, just get the best grades you can and prep for standardized testing starting junior year) but rather how to survive the brutal weedout.
Before you take AP Bio and AP chem, you must take bio and chem honors (they can be taken the same year if you're really good at science). Only exception is if your school has a special teaching system where both honors bio and AP Bio or honors chem and ap chem are taught together. AP Bio and AP chem are level 2 courses, thy suppose previous study (level1) in each subject.
You should have Physics honors or AP physics 1 at some point, too.
    Calculus AB or honors calculus.
AP English language and AP psych can be useful.
