Do You Think I Have a Chance?

Hello guys,

I've recently took a tour of Howard and Hampton University, my two top schools a few weeks ago and now I'm more interested on getting in now. On my tour, I was told that I would have a better chance of receiving a scholarship if I did early action. I just wanted to get an opinion on if I would have a chance on getting into either Howard or Hampton with my credentials. Any comments or critique is greatly welcomed.

20 on the ACT (Will be taking it again in September and October)
Might be getting a part-time job if opportunity is available
Might be volunteering at local church if opportunity is available
Took AP Classes (AP US History & AP English Comp. Received 1 on both tests :/)
3.4 GPA
Won an award for Society of Women Engineers with Honors

Only thing I'm pretty nervous about is that my junior year I got all C's in my core classes first semester and 3 C's second semester.

Do you think that if I could good letters of recommendations and with all of my credentials, do you think I'm still at a chance of getting a scholarship and getting accepted.

Thank you very much.

How vital were the classes you got Cs in? Were the classes you received Cs in heavily involved with your intended major? Your ECs and experiences may compensate for the Cs a bit, but not the the extent where they would replace your grades. If the classes were like English, Geometry, Algebra 2, Chemistry, etc. then I would recommend that you get your ACT up to around a 23ish to be safe. Also, it is essential that you fill your application with recs, an essays, and a personal statement. I can't tell you how important this can be. The recs show what type of person you are which is extrememly important, so don't think you're overloading your application if you include 2 or 3.

Some light at the end of the tunnel is that Howard is one of the schools that looks at your overall body of work (without just saying they do). They would rather have the person that has the potential to be extremely impactful rather than the person who is a 4.0 machine, but doesn't contribute to the school whatsoever.

As far as a scholarship? You'll need to meet the preset guidelines to receive one; the lowest ACT score you can receive for a scholarship is a 26.

Thank you so much for your reply. The classes I got C's in were Algebra, AP US History, AP English Comp, and Physics. But the only grade I raised second semester was my AP English grade to a B. My teachers said that the class was going to be hard and that there was a strong possibility that we could receive C's, but I was still worried. I plan on taking the ACT again and I think I have a strong chance of getting a higher score so hopefully if I do, I hope it doesn't hurt my chances of getting accepted into the school because of my grades.
