Hi I am senior on the south shore of Massachusetts and I am applying to school I am hoping to go into college majoring in psychology and either doing another major or minor in neuroscience or cognitive science. I have talked to a few people who have said not to go there because I do want to eventually get my Phd which takes time and money. People have said you end up taking a bunch of courses at UMass Amherst and its just not worth it to be paying that price. I am looking for more opinions.. is this true?

My son graduated from Hampshire, and my daughter is there now. I think that the college has great cognitive science courses and I suspect that you could earn a great degree with a Psychology concentration without ever setting foot on the UMass campus.

I personally think that an education at a small progressive liberal arts college, like Hampshire, is worth it. That however, is a very subjective view and is totally dependent on how much debt you would end up with upon graduation. If your debt would be many 10s of thousands of dollars, then you should consider a more economical solution, such as UMass or another state school.

My boss' daughter is at Hampshire and loves it. She is pursuing international studies and plans to become a lawyer.

One of my daughter's friends is at Smith, studying psychology and neuroscience and she really loves it, she is planning to go to med school.
