is applied Computer Science worth it?

hrawlinshrawlins 5 replies9 threads New Member
I hear a lot of good things about Computer Science. My school (IU) doesn't offer that however they offer Informatics. It is an "applied" CS with focus on human/comp interaction and how technology works in the real world. It isn't very popular so is it worth it? I thought about playing it safe and majoring in Accounting. Need help!!! Thank you

I don't know what the degree entails so I looked up IU informatics and found IU CS very quickly at IUB. What IU are you referencing?

After that, I found an IU sample for two years and it seems to be nothing about CS. In fact, the only class relevant to CS in any way was Human/Computer interaction and appeared to involve no programming. I don't know much about informatics, but from what I can tell there's very little CS if any at all.

Looking at your other threads, you seem to be looking for a mathy career. Any reason? Just trying to think up alternatives.

Thank you. I go to IU Kokomo. I guess I'm just trying to find someone's personal experience with CS/Informatics because there's not much about people who graduated with that degree on the internet. But yes I'm looking for mainly an in demand major. Good job prospects and Money. I do like math :)

Well, CS would be the obvious route. But yeah, your school doesn't appear to offer many good math options at all. The general math program looks decent though. Applied Math or Stats would be better of course, but you can get relevant classes through electives. Informatics is also included in it for what its worth. That route won't have amazing job prospects or amazing money. Accounting would be a safe bet but would you enjoy it? If you can see yourself in accounting, that seems to be your best option.
