AP Comp Sci A with NO Experience?

jchen97jchen97 Registered User Posts: 227 Junior Member
I am going to take the AP class next year but my teacher doesn't actually teach, just gives us assignments and such. I've used the intro classes to do other homework in, so I honestly don't have any idea how to program. Will the test be manageable to an essentially "new" student? Or is prior knowledge about java/programming needed?

Comp Sci can easily be self taught. I'd recommend you watch a bunch of YouTube videos cuz unlike other things, comp sci tutorials are abundant and it's math. If you excel in problem solving it won't be difficult.

Programming is quite fun. If you're willing to write code in your spare time and dedicate yourself to learning some CS terms, you should be ok. AP CS doesn't really go beyond some basic CS concepts.

Well, my AP Exam for APCS A is on Tuesday morning and I'm currently having problems figuring out what a method is. My teacher actually lets us play games in class. He doesn't know how to USE a computer. I'd really suggest actually working in class. Take a suggestion from an experienced future 1-getter on the APCS exam.

Well, you'll definitely need to know concepts such as inheritance, polymorphism, and interfaces. Also, you probably will want to become knowledgeable in the GridWorld case study early because that constitutes a good part of the AP Comp Sci exam.

@Smashbrosboy nice username! I love that game to death!

It's perfect possible, but you won't do as well others. A friend of mine took it with no experience and had to study his butt off to get a 3, while others who took regular computer science the previous year got 5's. It's all about how much you work; do not slack off.
