one of the courses i want to take is marked MWF/T during 11:35-12:25. i'm not sure what this exactly means. does it mean that there are three lectures a week and an optional one on tuesday? thanks.

what are the dates associated with this?

here's the thing in more detail:

    MATH 140

    Lecture

    3.000 Credits

    Calculus 1

    MWF 8:35 AM - 9:25 AM 09/04 - 12/04

    T 8:35 AM - 9:25 AM 10/09 - 10/09

now that you mention dates, i guess it's pretty clear that tuesdays is just one lecture. no idea why, but it sounds like a midterm or something. thanks for the clarification, but i'm still confused on the MWF thing. do we choose one lecture from the three days available or is it three times a week?

    This should clear things up

"Changes to the normal class schedule

Tuesday, October 9, 2007 - The normal Tuesday schedule of course activities is cancelled for October 9. In its place, all lectures, labs, conferences and other course-related activities that were cancelled on Monday, October 8 because of Thanksgiving Day will be held on Tuesday, October 9.
Thursday, March 20, 2008 - The normal Thursday schedule of course activities is cancelled for March 20. In its place, all lectures, labs, conferences and other course-related activities that are cancelled on Monday, March 24 because of Easter Monday will be held on Thursday, March 20."

Because holidays tend to fall on Mondays (and sometimes Fridays), each semester loses 2 MWF days and no T-Th (Labour Day and Thanksgiving in the Fall, and Good Friday and Easter Monday in the winter semester). So to balance the number of hours for all classes, one Tuesday in each semester has a Monday schedule.

thanks, but what about the MWF thing? is it three lectures a week or do we get to choose one of the following three days?

The class will usually meet three days a week - MWF. Because of the holiday on Monday, October 8th, the class will still meet three days that week - Tues. WF.

    Have you registered already?
If so, go to Minerva. Click student menu, then registration, then Step 5, weekly schedule. Go to week of October 8th and it will be perfectly clear to you.

hehe, i signed up awhile ago so i'm in no rush :)

so far, no issues with my schedule. HOWEVER, on thursdays, if i decide to take physics, i'll be having three classes in a row starting in the afternoon...

MUAR Western Music, followed by physics101, then followed by english 201 with 10 minute gaps in between. does this seem a bit overkill? i mean, music doesn't really seem like a difficult course (i guess the term here is bird course) and first year english doesn't seem so bad, but i don't know...

Does it matter if you don't have a full schedule before you go to McGill, I have like 12 credits picked in the fall and 7 credits picked in the Winter, should I attempt to fill it out, I want to switch a couple of things and feel like I'll be able to do that when I get there, is that correct? Or should I be trying to fill my entire year right now?

It doesn't matter as long as you've registered on time, and you will have time to add/drop classes in the first two weeks each fall and winter semesters. But you do need at least 12 credits per semester to be considered full time. So if you somehow require proof of full-time status for the winter semester soon, you may want to register for another couple of classes now. You'll have plenty of opportunity to change them later if necessary.

so some classes are three times a week and others are once a week? how come sometimes i see the same class that is MFW but also with a MW option with a different professor?
  • woodywoody Registered User Posts: 3,861 Senior Member
I noticed that the classes that meet twice a week meet for an hour and 20 minutes or so; classes that meet three times a week meet for 55 minutes. It comes out to about the same class time per week.

I've said it before, I think, but in general, MWF were 1 hour classes, and TJ (J for jeudi, or Thursday, back in the infomcgill gopher days) classes were 1.5 hour. So 3 hours a week each. The 5 minutes cut out of the beginning and the end of each period is relatively recent. Some rare courses only meet on MW for 1.5 hour each time, and even rarer classes have 3 hour blocks once a week. Small, graduate courses can arrange their own schedules too...
