I'm an EDII applicant, and I just checked out that I got deferred...:(
First of all, this is not the worst but heartbreaking....since MHC is my first choice...which i thought couldn't match me better...

I heard that MHC defer only a few which means they either admit or reject...here is the question, what made me sooOOOooo special to be in this " a few ". Is it because of ED II application? did they set the ED II application just to see who is interested but defer a lot from it to wait till the RD round? did they mean to do this? otherwise how comes EDII 's deadline is only 15 days apart from the RD?? or is there any other reasons??

Why do they usually defer you anyway??? any concrete reasons??

Can anybody help us??? what should I do....

I'm getting crazy and i really want to cry...
Rigor_col...sorry about your deferral...let's just get up and fight for a place in our dream college!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your profile says you are from China. Are you an international applying for fin aid? If so, they may have deferred you to compare you with the RD pool and decide how to spend their international fin aid bucks.

I haven't still got over my deferral frm Mount Holyoke (ED 1)....it seems that this year...most of the international applicants are being deferred. We are surely going to have tough competition in the regular pool. Just keeping my spirits high!!!!

    We still gotta chance

    Ladies, do not despair.

Last year my D (not an int'l) applied ED. She required a substantial amount of financial aid. She was deferred. She took it as a polite rejection, and immediately sent out applications to other schools. She also wrote a letter acknowledging the deferral, added a few new items since she had turned in her application (awards, etc.).

Amazing offers came pouring in from other schools, including one with a full ride and an offer to spend her first semester in London. Things were looking up for her. She accepted the full ride/London school, and even went to the campus (3000 miles away) to accept it at a special ceremony.

While there shaking the hands of the higher-ups and being treated graciously and generously, an acceptance letter came in the mail from MHC. With an equally appealing package (well, not London, but hey, MHC!).

She was sincerely torn. In the end she pulled out of full ride/London U for MHC, which after all, was her first choice.

Instead of moaning and groaning, get to work (this is a mother speaking).

If you haven't already, send a follow-up letter to MHC. Include something that maybe you didn't the first time. It doesn't have to be a long letter. But it should make a point.

Also get those other applications out, and be sure to include a couple that are sure bets (and that you'd be happy at), just so you start to see that you ARE valuable, and wanted.

I think the hardest part of a deferral and a "rejected" application are the feelings they drum up. Like being last to be picked for a game; or not being asked to a dance or party. So you're going to have to put those "devastated" feelings aside, and do things that will make you feel successful.

    Best to all of you.

Thank you [email protected]!um, mandark8, "just"aMom, thank you very much
It does feel like being the last to be picked in a game...bad feeling,
but let's just...forget about it for some time
So do I need to email them immidiately and then send my other materials?
or i just need to send my materials?

Drsuyi, it depends on how long it would take to send the materials. More than 10 days? I would e-mail them and let them know you'll be submitting additional items, perhaps with a short description.

And don't forget to send out your other applications. Put as much effort into them as you did into your MHC app.

my expected fin contribution from my family was 0 so may be it is the probable reason they deferred me. Please suggest!

Honestly I have no idea how the EFC works, and how. Ours was also 0 but we still ended up with a pretty good sized cost out of our pockets as well as student loans. We're doing it, but it isn't easy. We do not own a home. My car (the only one) is 9 years old. And I am still paying off my OWN student loans. So I do not live in luxury. I am a single parent. I get by. I wish I knew how the finacial aid system worked.

Like you, I'm anxiously waiting to see this year's fin. aid package. I hope it doesn't change too much.

Did your D send bank statement? I didn't and I'm worried if sending bank statement is required. Sounds funny cuz our family doesn't have a bank a/c obviously I can't send one!

No, US citizens do not send bank statements, but we were required to send in a LOT of other official documents (tax returns, etc.).

Everyone who is deffered is asked for more material.
The real question imo is - how many ED applicants are deffered vs rejected and how many of the deffered ones are accepted later? Does anyone have any data?

I've heard that good defer letter is specific letter to specific person not the common letter that mentions like, "our adcom has decided to DEFER"

Does the Common Data set include the number of deferrals? I don't think so, but I might be wrong.

I seriously doubt that there are two different kinds of defferal letters.
If you are so important for a school that they make the extra effort to write a special deferral letter, they would have admitted you right away.

even i don't think that there are two types of deferral letter...mine said..that they are still interested in me and asked me to send some additional grades or docs to give a more complete picture.

So, there is no way that they send some specific types of deferral letters. At least , i presume so. And, another thing rigor_col, it seems that ED applicants from Nepal are getting deferred...with exception of collegegirlee....
