How do Double-Majors work?

I am unsure if i understand double-majors... do you simply choose 2 majors you are interested in and request to double major in them? Of course they have to be similar to eachother, but do colleges have a list of majors that are double-majors?

I don't think they have to be similar at all. I'll be majoring in bio and poli sci.

Usually, a double major works like this:

Most colleges require you to take 3 types of classes:
    1) General Education
    2) Classes for your major
    3) Electives

A double major is where, you take all/most of your elective classes as those required for a second major.

Yeah, they don't have to be similar at all. I'm majoring in (broadcast) journalism and biology or biochemistry.
