Has anyone here done (or know someone who has done) the 8 year program at Stony Brook? How would you rate the program?

Also, on a separate note, I hear that Stony Brook is well-known for it's sciences, including molec. bio; Is this true?

I live right near there and know a few people in the program. I was planning on applying before I was accepted into rice/baylor.

I don't think SB is the right school for everyone at all. What are your goals? If your major goals are to do research/get into med school, the SB program might be perfect for you. However, socially, SB is not the same as small schools and you won't get the same prof/ student interaction.

The program is worth considering though, i think.

I don't really know. I only know 2 or 3 people who are in the program, and I am not highly familiar with their stats. However, they were near the top of their classes at a really competitive high school, and one turned down stanford and one turned down duke for the program - so they were good enough candidates to get into those schools.

This is what I heard. Last year, there were 2,000 applicants for 100 slots in the honors college (average SAT 1450). Of those accepted, 20 were granted interviews first in the honors college and then in the medical school. From that, 6 were chosen.

It's easier to get into Harvard, but there is a different number and population of students applying to Stony Brook and the majority are from New York State.
