Stanford Arts Supplement + Live Audition

Hello! :) I am going to apply to Stanford for undergrad when the time comes and I had a few music-related questions, so I was hoping someone on this subforum could help me out.

Essentially, I am considering minoring in music -- perhaps piano performance. I want to include an arts supplement via either the Common App or the specific kind Stanford requires. I also play the trumpet, so I was wondering whether I should include a video of that as well.

I've been playing piano for 11+ years and taught myself trumpet in the 7th grade and have picked it up quite quickly. Thus, I guess you could say that I am fairly proficient in both.

Would it be redundant to both include an arts supplement (piano, piano + trumpet?) and do a live audition? If I were to do both, would I need to prepare additional pieces on top of the two I am going to play live? Or would I be able to play the same pieces for the live audition and include recordings of those for the supplement.

Also, if I were to choose not to minor in music, would I still be able to do a live audition AND include an arts supplement?

Apologies for all of the questions... I'm a bit confused as to what to do right now. Perhaps I should contact the music department or admissions?

If any of this is unclear, please ask me to clarify; I'd be more than happy to answer any questions about myself as well. Thanks so much!

Hi ninja. Sorry if it seemed like you were being ignored. I like your idea of calling Stanford admissions. You might also post this on the "regular" Stanford message board.

Have you already read all the FAQ's on the Stanford page? Music @ Stanford: Auditions—Supplemental Auditions FAQ

I suggest you send all your questions directly to [email protected]. They will be much better able to answer your questions than any of us.

That said, my reading of it is they want the common app supplement if you audition via recording. If you submit their live audition request form you do not need to submit the supplement. You will need to submit a resume and a letter of recommendation for both methods. The recording follows the same requirements as the live audition.

"You may submit two recorded auditions in different areas (e.g. piano and violin, or jazz piano and classical piano). Because live audition times are limited, you may do only one live audition. If you prefer to do two auditions on two different instruments, you should send in two separate submissions. If both instruments are on the same recording, we will only evaluate the first instrument due to time constraints."

Clrn8mom: Yes, I've posted on the "regular" Stanford board already. They told me to post here :P

SpiritManager: Thank you for the link. Many of my questions have been answered.

I really appreciate the responses from both of you. Thanks!
