Tips for getting into NYO2?

I'm a high schooler interested in attending NYO2 this summer. I know it is an extremely prestigious program, as it is very difficult to get in. As part of the application process, a biographical essay is required, in which applicants must address...

" In approximately 300 words, describe your background and musical/educational experience. Also address how participating in this program would help you achieve your personal or artistic goals."

I've heard that this essay is a major component that determines whether or not an applicant will be accepted. Does anyone know what exactly NYO2 is looking for in terms of background and musical/educational experience? Do they want to see your musical accomplishments (performing at prestigious venues, winning competitions, having a leadership position in an orchestra)? Or are they looking for someone who hasn't had these opportunities? After all, they are geared towards students "from groups underserved by and underrepresented in the classical orchestral field."

Brought up in a decently well-off family, I was unfortunate to be given musical opportunities, such as attending precollege. Will talking about my musical achievements put me in a better or worse position? What are some key points I should address in talking about my musical background that would give me a better chance to be accepted?

Just be yourself. Answer the question straightforwardly, honestly and thoroughly and don't worry about what they are looking for so much as presenting yourself, your background and your experiences as they are.
