Dance 'Duds' for Dudes

lithpoollithpool 414 replies14 threads Member
OK...it's late & I'm thinking I must be a bit tired bc the title is so corny.... My son is a singer, actor, then mover....my question is....what do the guys wear for the dance portion of auditions. I've read Jazz pants, but haven't really found anything (online anyway), that doesn't cost a fortune for what seems to be pants similar to women's yoga pants (or for a guy who's over 6'). I understand that loose fitting clothing is a no no....thoughts/ideas/suggestions.
Thanks!

@lithpool Last year, my son wore jogger style pants that we just picked up at Marshalls. As long as they have give so they can move without ripping their pants, and they have a slim (not baggy) fit, I think it works. They just want to be able to see the lines of their body. We saw many young men dressed similarly.

To be more specific - try searching for men's soccer pants. That's the type of pants my son used. We call them joggerss

For dance prescreens, my son wore Addidas sweats that were slim fit and had a band at the ankle in all black and a close fitting, but not overly tight, black t-shirt. He is also a "mover."

And I recommend compression underwear or a dance belt. My son was a "mover" too, and I had to google what a dance belt was! After it arrived in the mail, son "modeled" the dance belt over his pants.....it was hilarious.

Thanks all! I found a couple pairs of black joggers, so S should be good. I've not heard of a dance belt before, but I'm thinking I can imagine......

Just an FYI on the whole dance belt thing.

My son is on a competition dance team. He prefers the brief style dance belt to the thong style unless it is for ballet tights then you have to use the thong (he hates it). Really it is just tighter underwear that is a little padded so you won’t know “what is going on down there”. He started using them when he actually injured himself (one of the boys) a bit doing something 😬. Poor guy. I liken it to jocks wearing jock straps!

But they are expensive and if he is just a basic mover he may not want them. Dancers/ aggressive movers should totally get them.

I agree that it's probably best to just get a dance belt and use it in the auditions. My son is not a serious dancer and has Several pair of the "full seat" dance belt now that he's in an MT program. He has, thus far, been able to avoid the dreaded thong - and I suspect that unless you're in a very strict ballet setting, you can probably get away with the brief style which are usually called "full seat". I'd start there until he has to go to the other.

It is wise to get a dance belt for auditions - he will need multiple dance belts if he's dancing every day so the money doesn't go to waste. S was a former athlete so not much different than a jock strap as @buggirl74 says.

And here I was worried about joggers! LOL
Thank you all for your input and updates! I believe I'll now be looking for a dance belt!

My son is a ballet dancer first, so he is used to the dance belt, and he routinely wears it for almost any dancing simply for comfort and protection! He has a hand-me-down pair of soccer pants from his older brother that he wears a lot, and those are very common among dancers. But he LOVES the Lululemon ABC pants (look up what that stands for!:)). They are pricey but worth every cent IMO. He has two pairs - one that fits tight and one a little looser, and I swear those are the only pants he needs. He has worn them for dance auditions, vocal auditions, casually, and as dress pants, and I think they will last him for years.

The boys who looked good in my opinion had jazz pants with dance belt, jazz shoes, and a white or black tight fitting shirt. The jazz pants aren't that expensive through discount dance and looking like a dancer even when you are not goes a long way.

I love the north comment 😂😂😂😂. I’ll make sure my dancer son gets the message. Being a mom to all boys cracks me up!!!

@buggirl74 one of the funniest moments I had was buying show makeup for my son (before he had any type of professional kit). We had some HUGE laughs at the drug store matching skin tone and picking out "guy" liner :-)
