How to find out if a scholarship was won?

SunnyFlorida22SunnyFlorida22 98 replies7 postsRegistered User Junior Member
I'm sure I'm missing something, but can someone help?

My D was a finalist for this year, graduating class of 2019... how is she supposed to find out out if she was awarded money?

Thanks

    Scholarship through a college or an outside scholarship? If she was awarded the scholarship she would have been notified.

    If you are selected as a scholarship recipient, you are notified by postal mail and your portal is updated. Around the end of May(?), postal mail will be sent to those who were not selected.

    Thanks so much for the reply, but which portal should she log into? Just the one for the college she is attending in the fall?

    @SunnyFlorida22

    Well...is the scholarship from the college she is attending?? If so, then check that portal.

    If it’s from an outside agency, then she can contact them, and she should check her email as well.

    Have her check her spam folder too in email.

    If the scholarship is from a college she is not attending, she would not be able to use it...

    She is a national merit finalist, going to a private university. They will accept outside scholarships toward tuition... really not sure what we should be looking for, but haven't heard anything at all from anyone. Really hoping for any scholarship money whatsoever!

    @SunnyFlorida22 My son logged in to his NMSC portal and the offer was there from University of Florida for a $2000 scholarship which he accepted last night. As long as your daughter has put in her #1 choice in the NMSC portal, then the offer will be forthcoming, if not already there. You will also receive something in the mail from NMSC soon regarding the scholarship offer from her #1 school.

    Congrats to your son, @DesertCactusDad ! And thanks to everyone for the replies. I'm assuming the NM portal is the one that just says Main Menu, 1, 2, 3 for applying and that her application was submitted way back in September? That is the only info we see when logged into the NM site.

    I don't know why this has become so difficult, lol. We are totally in the dark as to any scholarship offers but will continue to keep our eyes open for snail mail and/or portal offers. Good luck to everyone!

    @sunnyFlorida22 if the school she is going to attend in the fall is not a sponsor school, then she will not get a scholarship from them. I believe all of the NMO and corporate scholarships have been awarded. You can call NMO and talk to them if you are still wondering. They are very helpful!!

    We called National Merit Corp to find out if our DD won a scholarship from National Merit and found out she did not win, This was shortly after May 1st. We were pleasantly surprised to find our that DD's #1 college choice does award National Merit Scholarships - 5 this year. National Merit advised calling the Financial Aid office, which we did. The Financial Aid office was not aware of National Merit awards from the University but did let us talk to a Scholarship person. My DD let the Scholarship person know that she was not receiving a scholarship from National Merit or from any company and the only way she could become a National Merit Scholar was for the college to send her name to National Merit before July 1st. The National Merit folks would then award a scholarship of between $500 and $2000, renewable for 4 years. The University would decide the amount. National Merit announces University sponsored award (Scholarship's from the University, as described above) periodically, the most recent was June 5th and the last is in July. It is not too late for a University to choose someone as a National Merit Scholar. We felt that even if DD only received $500, it would be great to be a National Merit Scholar. DD heard from National Merit that she is a Scholar about 1 1/2 weeks after talking to people at the school. Don't just go by what the Financial Aid folks say, ask for the National Merit Scholarship person. Also, National Merit can tell you which Universities have agreements with them. DD's University doesn't mention National Merit Scholaships on their web-site, we found out from National Merit Corp that DD's University does indeed fund National Merit Scholarships. I agree that calling National Merit is a good idea.

    Our son was notified by his schools as well as by mail. There should also be a list, provided by your state, that shows all of the NM winners.
