I got rejected from wharton, HYPS. Oh well, i'm totally in for NYC.

SAT: 2280
SAT II: 800/800/730
GPA: 97/100
Rank: 2nd/650. this year dropped to 4th/650

Teacher recs: probably killed my application. positive but generic.
Counselor recs: great. better than teachers
Essays: Main essay was extremely risky... i thought it would show maturity and make me stand out... but i guess it didn't pay off at the big schools. My NYU short essays were kinda bad cause i did them in a rush. I made one typo in oen of them too...

EC's: Founded amnesty club (recognized by amnesty international, as in club was featured in their newsletter), founded political science club, founded intercity youth political organization (with chapters in 5 high schools, 3 cities, 70+ members, and is recognized by my city's mayor and my province's premier... i seriously thought this would be a hook... guess not), worked at my mom's company for the past 3 years (self-made entrepreneur), own my own company with 2 other friends, repair wheelchairs for the redcross (3 years running during summers), national stock market competition team captain.

Asian Male, Canadian

Well, i thought i had a good shot at wharton at least, but guess not. But screw that, i'm really looking forward to the big city, NYC, and having a ton of fun while getting a great degree at stern (if i get in).

Wow, after reading this thread I feel alot luckier for getting into Stern and a WHOLE lot luckier for the fact that NYU doesn't pay as much attention to class rank.

Rejected from Wharton, Columbia, Waitlisted at Rice, got into safeties.

I'm all for NYU, my only concern is that I feel like going to Stern will basically force me to have a career in business... well of course its a business school, and finance is no less tedious than other forms of business, but I'm still maintaining a strong interest in law and hope that Stern doesn't take away from the possibility of me going to a good law school.

Decision: ACCEPTED!

Stats:
• SAT: 2200, 790M,760V,650W
• SAT IIs: 740 Math I, 740 US History
• GPA: 3.72
• Rank: 55/480
• Other stats: Debate Captain, Amnesty International, Rotary, National Honor Society, AP Scholar with Distinction, National Merit Commended, Large number of debate awards, some local volunteer efforts.
Subjective:
• Essays: Same ones I sent to the Ivies, it actually made more sense for the NYU prompt than the page 217 prompt for Wharton.
• Teacher Recs: Good/Great, one teacher loved me, but I never read them.
• Counselor Rec: Excellent, counselor is very enthusiastic
• Hook (if any): None
• Applied early? Regular
Location/Person:
• State or Country: Texas
• School Type: Public, Very Competitive
• Ethnicity: Caucasian
• Gender: Male
Other Factors (fin.aid): $15,000 Stern Scholarship
General Comments: I still might go to Rice if I get off their waitlist.

Scholarships appear to be partly need-based, so even if you didn't get a scholarship it probably just means your Financial need wasn't nearly as high as others

Wow, vercingetorix, I couldn't have asked for a more perfect link!

What was originally and uncomfortableness with locking myself into Stern has turned into a much more positive feeling knowing that should I attend Stern that I have the opportunity to pursue the things that appeal most to my interests, Finance, International Business, and still be open to building a foundation for a law career with the help of the pre-law advisor and those extremely informative advisory packets...

I don't have much, at least compared to the other Stern people. Evaluate me anyways.

NJ public school (ranked top 10 in state)

GPA: 4.02 weighted
Rank in top 8%

SAT I: 2040 (M 760, V 600, W 680)

SAT II: MATH IC 750, MATH IIC 800, CHINESE 800, BIOLOGY 630

AP: Comp. Science 5, Biology 4

I get mostly A's and B's in all honors and AP courses.

E.C.:
~Art club (officer), Computer Club (officer), Math Club, Teacher Assistant, National Honors Society, Spanish Honors Society. Not much in school.
~a lot of work experience at a hotel, bakery, pool and my Chinese school
~some volunteer work at library and pool

any suggestions on how to improve my app.?
