Baird Scholarship for NMFs?

The website indicates that a substantial number of National Merit Finalists receive a Baird Scholarship offer by CAS.

- Does anyone know how the actual winners are selected (SATs, GPA, nice smile?) or have anecdotal reports of their own selection / rejection?

- Must the applicant designate NYU as his first choice to NMSC? (This is a problem since another college on our short list requires designation by 3/1 to qualify for a very substantial program.)

- What is the range of monetary awards?

Thank you,
