How is the marketing department at NYU? IS it that good or should I consider Wharton?

Besides Finance, what else is Stern known for?

(sorry if this a stupid question to current Stern students)

Whoa, you don't want to go to UMich. From my high school, they took anybody with a pulse, and I was out of state!

Also, if you go to Stern or Wharton, you should seriously consider not majoring in marketing only since it's considered a joke/fake major according to my buddies at the ug business programs of NYU and Penn; major in finance or make marketing your second major along with finance.

Michigan is a great school and their business program is only going to get harder to get accepted into since they're implementing the new preferred admissions process.

but i agree, if u attend stern or wharton don't just major in marketing because it really is a joke major.

What do you mean "joke" major? Do you mean that it's ridiculously easy or that employers don't care for it?

Both. If you're going to pay all that money to go to NYU or Penn, you might as well have a major that's not considered a joke. If you like marketing so much, just double with economics or finance.

That's a good point, but everyone from Wharton gets the same Economics degree with a concentration in something. And most people don't end up doing what they major in, so don't you think that it would be beneficial to major in something I enjoy and could get good grades. The high GPA would impress the employer and I don't think the major would be that big of a deal. And if i wanted my career to be marketing orientated, why not major in marketing?

    Thoughts?

FYI, the Wharton economics degree is in name only, you still have to pick a course of study and it doesn't have to be econ. Wharton did this so they wouldn't have to call it a BBA, which is way too vocational sounding for an elite school (e.g. at NYU, Sternie's get a BA or BS, but not the "unprestigious" BBA).

this is coming from my friends dad who is a VP for GE capitol...

if you major in marketing you will only be hired to do things related to marketing, but if you major in finance you could be hired to do things dealing with finance or marketing because marketing is common sense if you know about business..... whereas finance is more than mere common sense. therefore you should major in finance because it will take you further than marketing.

Thanks for your feedback. I think I'm going to go in with a concentration in marketing but then change it to finance or economics once I know what each one is about.

    hi there,

I am thinking about majoring in marketing in Stern this fall .... I will probably double-major in finance and marketing .... but is marketing that bad as a major? and is Stern's marketing department that bad?

So should I change to Accounting and finance? or finance and Econ? or finance and intl business?

    Thanks a lot!
