I was very impressed with the school. First I sat in on a freshman voice and speech class, where they did a lot of work with breathing and tension with the body and then applied it to their monologues. I also saw a musical theatre audition technique class which had sophomores through seniors in it; the students were working on learning how to use their voices when singing different styles of music, which is becoming more and more essential with all the jukebox musicals on broadway (this week with pop, rock, and country). Finally at night I sat in on a rehearsal for Thoroughly Modern Millie which really solidified the fact that the students here really are recieving such high quality training. If I saw their production in any professional theatre I would have nothing to complain about. They don't have a cut program and they are just just put an Ohio Showcase into place where they fly the agents out to Ohio to work with the seniors and see their work as well as give their underclassmen exposure to the agents. All the faculty were extremely welcoming and friendly. If you have any other questions feel free to PM me!

My D was probably there the same time as you because it sounds identical to her trip. I was not able to go unfortunately. There were 4 accepted MT students there (1 boy, presumably you, and 3 girls visiting on Tuesday. Sound familiar? She was pretty impressed with the school and the MT program. The MT faculty, current MT students, and school admissions people were all fantastic. The Inn at the school is top notch. We really think this program is one on the rise and my daughter is considering it strongly.

Yup, that was me! It's between ONU and one other school at the moment, but I was really impressed during the visit and I think it would be a really strong choice. the only downside I can see is the remote location and possibly the weather. (it snowed during my campus tour)

I see that people were considering Ohio Northern last year. Did anyone decide to go there and, if so, how does their child like it.

My D is wait listed at Northern. Does that give her a good shot at acceptance from others' experience?

ONU is one of my D acceptances --- we would also love some feedback from current students! We would also like to hear if anyone has visited campus this year.

After my daughter’s acceptance, we visited Ohio Northern. We flew into Columbus and drove about 1.5 hours through the beautiful snow covered countryside. (Kind of a different experience for Houstonians!) It is a very pretty campus in a small town.

ONU scheduled a campus tour and let all of us sit in on an acting class with John Armstrong. It was a great experience and I was thrilled to see how hands on and interactive he was with the students. We also spent about an hour talking to Lloyd Butler about the program. Although the campus is a bit remote, they really seem to do a good job reaching out to bring great guest artists and contacts to the students.

My D stayed in the freshman dorms with some great students and attended classes with them. We attended a show that evening. They were even kind enough to let her attend a master class. She liked the classes, especially the master class. She especially liked the dynamics between the students and between the teachers/students.

Please feel free to PM me if you have any detailed questions.

Okay - this is second hand, but one of our former students is attending Ohio Northern for Lighting Design. I believe the major has the word International in it! He loves it there. He said it is very small, and quiet, but has the biggest and best theatre in the area, so when there are shows they get swamped with people! I don't know anything about admissions, but do know this student had a high GPA and SAT scores, and had tons of experience with lighting, even winning an award for doing lighting for a prestigious dance company. For what it's worth!

I haven't been on CC for awhile and a friend alerted me to the ONU posting. My daughter is a junior MT at ONU. Ask away!

So gpmom, my D is on the wait list for ONU. In your D's experience do they take kids off the wait list or should we pretty much move on to her other options?

gpmom my daughter has been accepted to the MT program. Can you tell us what your student likes and dislikes about the program. Where the emphasis is, etc. Anything you can share would be wonderful. Thanks!

I am so sorry, I have no idea how they manage the wait list. I think it is kind of early to make any final decisions on where you want to go unless you got into the number one dream school on your list. I don't think you have to let the schools know until May 1st as I recall, so there is still two months and places pretty much let us know by the end of March/Mid April if you on a wait list. I wouldn't hesitate to call the MT dept and ask them as well. It would only show a strong interest in the program and wouldn't hurt.

My daughter is very happy in the MT program at ONU. She has had many great opportunities, loves working with John, Kierstin and Lloyd. John is directing the spring musical which is Nine. My daughter was cast as Luisa and is thrilled. She was BEYOND excited when she was chosen to work with Joe Iconis last year. He came to ONU for an entire weekend and worked with a select group of students who then performed a show on Sunday, with him accompanying them on the piano. This was huge for my daughter as the very first song she ever sang as a solo was the infamous Blue Hair when she was a sophomore in high school. ONU does strive to bring in guest artists, casting directors, etc. for master classes. I really can't speak much on the dance front. Kathleen loves her dance instructor but beyond that I can't comment too much. I guess if she isn't complaining about it, then it's all good.
The downside would probably be the remoteness of the campus. My daughter is one though who can adjust to wherever she is, be it huge state university campus or smaller campus. She is in a sorority which was great as a freshman, but I think can be challenging time wise as each year passes due to the amount of rehearsal. It seems like she is ALWAYS rehearsing for something which to me is good. Means she is busy doing what she loves. First two years she did not have a MT roomate, which worked out fine. This year she does, but they are friends and decided to room together. Either way it didn't matter to my daughter whether she had an MT roomate or not.
Food at ONU is definitely something that needs to be improved upon and I think they are making efforts to improve their selection. My daughter would probably say that was biggest downfall, the food. If I can answer any other questions let me know. I'll try to get back her more often and check the boards. Good luck all! Believe me, I KNOW HOW STRESSFUL THIS WHOLE PROCESS IS!!! I only feel like now after three years I am coming down from it.

Okay!! Another mom here singing ONU's praises!! Havent been on the forum since, well along time! Last year was crazy and now it seems like centuries ago! My daughter is a Fresh MT and is very happy. The program is solid and she is excited to be amongst so many talented peers within the program. She has had a wonderful year so far and has been cast in the ensemble of NINE for the spring musical. She is very excited about getting to be on the main stage :). She is very happy with the program being within an environment of a liberal arts university. Therefore when time permits she is able to enjoy the perks of a regular university, i.e. football games and her sorority. Regarding the sorority, she is unable to attend functions sometimes due to rehearsal but is allowed to miss without being penalized. She loves the professors and finds them to be really concerned about her growth as an actor. Her classes are small and this allows the personal attention. She has 15 in her program. 8 girls and 7 boys. About half are from Ohio and the remaining are from Ga, Texas, California, S.C. and New York. The remoteness is not an issue because they are so busy with the program that when and if they have time for fun, there is plenty to do in Findlay and Lima. Ada is quaint and there are fine eating establishments with a Rite Aide. Columbus and Dayton are about and hour and half drive. We live in Georgia and she takes the school shuttle to Dayton and flies home. Please shoot me questions and I will respond. I also want to make this crazy time for anyone a little easier!
