Deferred by Ohio State

I applied to Ohio State back in the end of October, 2010 as a journalism major and have just heard back from them now with my application status listed as "deferred" or as OSU puts it, "After an initial review of your application, your application has been submitted for a second review and you will be notified by the end of March with a final decision.". I am wondering what my chances are at being admitted and I'm really nervous and anxious as to what their response will be. They said they will let me know no later than March 31, 2011.

I am a first generation college student and am also half Mexican, but I look more Mexican than I do the other half of me, which is white...so basically I bring diversity to the table. I am a student who is highly involved (I was voted 'Most Involved' in my senior class) and I hold many leadership positions in the clubs and organizations I am involved with. I am also involved in community service, nothing extensive but nonetheless I am involved in some. My current cumulative GPA, with my senior first semester included, is a 3.83/4.0 scale. I am ranked number 24 in my senior class out of 150. My only downfall is the darn ACT, on which my highest score was a 21. I just don't do well on that test and I've taken it a total of 3 times. I assume that's what's keeping me from being admitted is my low ACT score. Also, I take college courses via Post Secondary Enrollment Option (PSEOP) and I do well in the classes I take at the university as well.

I just want to know if anyone else is in or was in my same situation with Ohio State or another university comparable to that of OSU. Any help/response is greatly appreciated! Also, please not that I am a US citizen. Born and raised in Ohio.

Being a first generation college student (something Ohio State takes very seriously) and Hispanic (OSU has been a staple on the annual list of best universities for Hispanics) are both big pluses for Ohio State.

What's put you on the deferred list is your class rank being outside the top ten percent AND your poor ACT. Hold out hope. The automatic rejections have already gone out, so they are still considering your app.

Lenny - are you just guessing when you say the automatic rejections have gone out? I've only heard about a few who have been rejected and they were all in the last week. I only ask because my DD's status still says Evaluation. Her stats are 3.4 gpa/27 ACT so we're pretty sure she's on the bubble. Just keep wondering when she'll hear something.

Im in a similar situation to proudmonof2... I have a 3.3 with a 1270/1870 SAT, and I feel im on the bubble as well.

A lot of the deferring is due to class rank on top of test scores according to the person I talked to. Sadly today my counselor said she had to fix my rank because my school recorded my rank as 62, when really I am 26 in a class of 321.. It was because the new program did not know how to calculate me because I'm graduating early.. I resent my transcripts and hope I get reconsidered with the correct stats.

^ that makes sense the class rank seeing as thats how they will judge students, not always by gpa. although my school doesnt rank...im jealous though, i have not recieved any decision yet and i am literally going crazy...i emailed an admissions counselor and was told its taking longer for me because of a big increase in my act scores...

Well that sounds like good news foodgud! how big of an increase? and my school didn't rank either, but that would have hurt me cause my school is insanely competitive.

Well, I truly hope all of us on this forum get in! Ohio State has literally been my dream school since I can remember. Ever since people have asked me where I want to go to college I've always said gladly, "Ohio State!". I've had numerous family members go there (cousins etc) and have plenty of friends there now. I love the campus and you can feel/see the Buckeye Pride and it's alive and well in Columbus. I truly hope I get in! I just have to (try to) patiently wait until after February first. Best wishes to eveyone waiting to get in/ deferred for a second review such as myself. Go Bucks!

If my daughter applied just before December 1st, when do you think she might expect a decision? She got her application in so she might be considered for a buckeye scholarship. (out of state). Thanks.
