WiFi on campus? Get a phone with 3G contract or unlocked?

Bit of a strange question I know, but it is somewhat relevant.

Is WiFi plentiful on campus? I'll be a student coming in internationally, and I've been wondering about what to do about a phone. I can get a phone outside US unlocked, and just get a cheaper contract without 3G and whatnot and it'll be cheaper in the long run.

I don't know how much internet I will be needing (/wanting) to use.. but if there is plenty of wifi on campus, then Id imagine 3G wouldn't be that important.

So yeah the main question is.. is 3G worth it on campus, or is there enough wifi around so that you can make do without it?
