Is Ohio State Competitive To Get Into With A 3.5 GPA Weighted and High Test Scores?

CollegeFreak9488CollegeFreak9488 93 replies48 threads Junior Member
Does Ohio State no longer accept people outside of the top 25% of their class? Because in this link it seems there is a score cutoff. Has anyone gotten in with high test scores and a 3.4 or 3.5ish weighted GPA? Or do I not have a chance even with a rigorous courseload? Because I am in the 3.4 Weighted GPA range and am taking two AP classes this year. Can I still get in with high test scores. I should also mention I am not in the top 25% of my class.

There are no score/gpa/rank cutoffs. From the link you posted above under Admission criteria (click the drop down):

"Criteria of our holistic review, in no particular order.
Successful completion of Ohio State's minimum college prep requirements (see table below)

High school performance (class rank or GPA), including participation in accelerated programs like Honors, AP and IB; Ohio State does not have minimum requirements for class rank or GPA

Standardized test score (ACT or SAT); Ohio State does not have minimum requirements for ACT or SAT scores..."

89% were in the top 25% of their class. This means 11% were not in the top 25% of their class. So the answer to "Does Ohio State no longer accept people outside of the top 25% of their class? " seems to be an obvious no. I think it is fair to assume, however, that some of these lower-ranking admits were special in other ways - recruited athleted, underrepresented minorities, donor/alumni children, etc.

You say "seems there is a score cutoff". I don't see it - can you point out to what you are referring?

I think it is fair to say that a lower class rank and lower test scores make admission less and less likely - I think that's true at most competitive-admission colleges.

Yes, you can still get in. High test scores, strong other characteristics will help. They may even be a near-requirement. But not to sugarcoat things - it is fair to say that they odds are somewhat long,

Would need high test score to get in, most GPA would be 3.75+

If OSU is your school of choice though - don't give up. Many students not accepted to main campus choose to go to one of the regionals for their first year and transfer to main campus as a Sophomore. Some students choose to go to a completely different school and apply as a transfer their second year. In the end, their diploma will say "OSU" just like those that enter Freshman year. So don't give up!!
