Replies to: Babson?

Well, i do know you can get a 5-year master's (admittedly in entreupreneurship... eh butchered) from Babson if you go to Olin... are you sure you can only get accredited from your home institution?

And another thing... I realize that Olin has a very high GPA average.

It's selective, due to the small number of slots. I understand that.
What I'm wondering is, if I have a low GPA (the _highest_ [i.e i'm not getting it :'/] unweighted GPA I can get at the end of this year is 3.75, weighted like 4.5) but good EC's, and test scores, do I actually have a shot of getting in? Or are these babson questions completely theoretical anyway? :<<<

Yeah, the only other program if u go to Olin is with an extra year u get a Master's in Technological Entrepreneurship awarded from Babson. As to whether u have a shot, I'd say go for it. Show your interest in the school.

I can't remember exactly what my high school GPA was, but it was lower than that, and I got in. Something around 3.5 unweighted and 5.3 weighted (out of 6.0). I wouldn't worry too much about your GPA. If you're concerned about getting in, I'll echo the showing interest in the school bit. Olin likes that.

Olin, Wellesley and Babson are in general trying to collaborate more, but you can't get a minor or major from a school you're not actually enrolled at, and I don't think that'll change soon. If finance falls under arts/humanities/social sciences, you could do an "AHS concentration/capstone" in finance, but it's not a minor, and I'm not sure if/how it shows up on your degree.

chanoob, I know Wellesley students can get some sort of engineering certificate from Olin, but I don't know the details of that or if it's available to Babson students.

Oh, I didn't think of that. A Concentration/Capstone in Finance would probably be possible and something that would show up on your resume and transcripts. I don't think that's ever been done before. Euroazn, a Capstone is essentially like your final senior project at Olin, so for u it potentially could be finance related. You may want to talk to an administrator at Olin about that since the only Capstone's we've ever had and the only options mentioned are a humanities capstone, or an entrepreneurship capstone, which do not include a business subject like Finance. Ohnocollegeapps, did u end up attending Olin?

Cool thanks a bundle guys. Any specific ways to show interest? Like I know penn does that college options roadshow which you can attend... I might visit Olin next month [not sure though.]

I don't really have any specific tips on how to show interest, sorry.
  • EuroaznEuroazn - Posts: 1,171 Senior Member
    Heh... it's ok xD

By the way, I guess this question is to any Olin student (particularly the ones in my situation... i.e not fantastic GPA :/) what do you think got you in?
  • ohnocollegeappsohnocollegeapps Registered User Posts: 94 Junior Member
I'm not sure exactly what it was that got me in. My essays were pretty good but not absolutely fantastic. My recommendations might've been fantastic but were probably in the good to pretty good range. I provided some supplementary info -- photos of art I had done, and an essay that was more on the creative side, which I thought was pretty damn good, not to boast. It was probably one or more of these factors that the admissions people really liked, but I've no idea what exactly it was that got me in.

And yeah, I can't really think of a solid way to show interest prior to being enthusiastic in your CW interview. Just put effort into your application, and hope that it shows.

Ohnocollegeapps, did you end up going to Olin?
  • ohnocollegeappsohnocollegeapps Registered User Posts: 94 Junior Member
Yeah I did. Sorry I don't really check this forum often at all. I'm a sophomore. We live in the same building. Wassup.

Um...I'm pretty sure I addressed this in what I wrote above. You CANNOT get any form of a degree from Olin if you attend Babson and you CANNOT get any form of degree from Babson if you attend Olin. The exception is if you begin at Olin and do the 4 year (maybe 5?) joint program where you get your degree from Olin and a Masters in Technological Entrepreneurship from Babson. You do that all at once and get both degrees at the end of your 4 (or 5?) years. As a Babson student, you can take only 1 Olin course per semester.

    euroazn,

everyone at babson gets a major in business-- so you will major in business and have the ability to "concentrate" in up to two areas.

if you are particularly interested in finance and investment, you can concentrate in finance. these are the corresponding classes, and you must take at least 4 of them:
    FIN3515: Corporate Financial Management
FIN4510: Corp. Finance Modeling & Decision Making Tools
    FIN3520: Security Valuation
    FIN4530: Investments
    FIN3555: Real Estate Investment
    FIN4540: Corporate Financial Strategy
    FIN3560: Financial Markets & Instruments
    FIN4560: Options & Futures
    FIN3565: Real Estate Development
    FIN4520: Babson College Fund
    FIN4570: Global Financial Management
FIN4535: Fixed Income and Structured Products

everyone is required to take a finance course sophomore year, and after this class you can start taking any of the above.

you can also concentrate in finance and something else. the special thing about babson is that every one takes a basic level course in all aspects of business (finance, accounting, hr, operations, marketing, communications, IT, economics, etc.) as well as liberal arts (rhetoric, humanities, culture, politics, law, film, or whatever interests you). Entrepreneurship is by no means the only type of class...

Right, but I was talking about Olin'ers, and what they can do at Babson.
