40 year HS reunion: what to wear?

I know this topic has come up before, but I haven't seen it in awhile.

My 40 year HS reunion is the end of September. I'm still torn about attending ( it's out of state, travel costs, etc). But if I go, I'm stumped as to attire.

The reunion is at a winery, so it is not requiring a fancy dress. Our 20 year reunion was there so I have a feel for the venue. There are gardens outdoors and a somewhat cavernous building for the inside portion.

Weather there (Oregon) can be iffy. Could be warm or rainy.

So, any recommendations? Jeans are too casual, but a semi-formal is too dressy.

What is the right type of pants or dress to wear to look good, but not over dressed? 20 years ago I wore a casual pantsuit, im thinking something different this time.

Something that makes you look 10 years younger and 20 pounds thinner. :D Just kidding -- no good suggestions here, which is probably one reason I never go to my reunions...

    Hey, I want intparent's outfit!
I'm still loving the summer long dresses, so how about one of those with a wrap?

I'd wear nice khaki or similar slacks with a gorgeous top and bring a cute jacket in case of cold or rain. I'm not very fond of my reunions but like H'a, since their class was close. For me HS was mostly about my then-BF. didn't have much in common with peers then and less now.

How about something like this in a jewel tone?

I would wear black slacks with a traveler type twin set ... your choice of colors. For me, I would do black slacks, black tee and maybe a red/black jacket/cardigan?

By traveler type -- I mean that knit fabric that drapes so well and never wrinkles.

Sorry...not a fan of the travelers knits!

I would wear something a bit nicer than khakis. For my 40th, I wore black silk shantung slacks with a grey silk Chicos jacket with a little bit of beading. I thought it made me look ten pounds thinner, and 20 years younger. I should have worn a red silk jacket...it would have been brighter!

I almost wore the same dress I wore to the 10th reunion...but changed my mind at the last minute.

We are having a 45 th reunion next summer and I'm already thinking about what to wear!

I wore this to my 35th college reunion and had someone come up to me dying to know where I'd gotten the dress:

What a Tweet! Dress | Mod Retro Vintage Dresses | ModCloth.com

I also wore this to another event at the reunion and really like it too:

Palm Springs into Action Dress | Mod Retro Vintage Dresses | ModCloth.com

For my high school reunion, I was super tempted to wear something I'd worn to the 20th reunion which still fits and is actually back in style in a retro way, but I ended up deciding to wear pants most of the time. It's a girls school and I'm not interested in impressing anyone. They also changed the time of reunion from June to April so I wanted warmer clothes.

I like those styles a lot, Mathmom...but I do NOT do green...not ever!

    Love those dresses, Mathmom!

Although they do seem a little like "The Help" characters would be wearing them.

I would wear black pants and either a silk blouse if the weather is warm or a cashmere sweater if the weather is chilly.

I finally went to a reunion last year. It was in the evening. I wore a knee-length black silk chiffon skirt with a black camisole/tank top and a thin black cardigan buttoned part way up. And black suede t-strap kitten heels and a string of pearls.

Crizello, one thing I would do is look on Pinterest. Look on women's fashion and you can search for mature or women over 50. It will give you a lot of ideas. Alumother has a blog and she has a great sense of style and pictures! Her blog will list I think other blogs of umm some mature bloggers and they have some great ideas too! (Maybe alumother will come over here and give her suggestions :)

I'm not as comfortable in dresses as I am in pants. Not sure why because I've been told that my legs are one on my better assets lol! I might wear a pair of printed or plain pair of ankle length pants with a solid color top or lightweight sweater with a really great scarf. I would probably wear ballet flats since I'm a ballet flat kind of person. Definitely wear something that is "you" and that you feel comfortable in.

Maybe my outfit is not that dressy but I guess I am thinking of the venue and that it is on the west coast and might be a bit more casual.

Crizello, I'm a personal shopper/stylist, my clients pay me to dress them for these types of events. If the party is in the evening then a cocktail dress would be appropriate. If you're more comfortable in pants then a pair of dressy pants with a pretty top or jacket would look nice. If the party is in the afternoon then a dress that you would wear to a luncheon, a skirt and cute top, or casual pants with a pretty top would look good. Be careful with maxi dresses because if you dont have the right proportions they can make you look awful.

My clients know that my number one rule is ths- if you don't feel confident you won't look good.

If you like the modcloth retro look most of the styles come in other fabrics.

I'm fine with dressy pants to for a reunion too. The main thing is to wear something that makes you feel good and that will be comfortable for a lot of standing around.

An Oregon winery? Every single one I've been in --- and it's a regular excursion for us --- skimps on heat. Think sweater or shawl or both. You might get lucky and hit a warm day, but not likely. Also, you may be standing on concrete so be kind to your feet.

Love Mathmom's dresses - I would totally wear them!

OP, I say don't worry about WHAT to wear, just think about WHO is wearing it - YOU! Wear something that is very you - something you are comfortable in, something you look good in - and if you do have a "style" - go buy something new so you feel fresh and great in it!

Khaki pants would never be me. Black pants would never be me. But some skinny jeans with nice shoes and a cute top and a light cardigan WOULD be me! Or one of those Modcloth dresses a few posts up. A long to the floor casual dress would never be me, but a colorful sundress would!

The point is, there is no "uniform" that is appropriate - IMO, a reunion is a time/opportunity to show who you are through your dress. If you are not into clothes that much, then wear something comfortable but go get your hair done just before the reunion. Embrace yourself!!!
