Me! Some of my family are in France now attending the games. We're close with someone playing in the tournament and they'll be following her around France. Lucky them!

That was easy -- but they have a long way to go, and many teams who will be determined not to be routed.

Note that running up the score is encouraged by the ranking and tie break rules in the group stage. Basically, the order is (based on all games within the group) points (win = 3, draw = 1, loss = 0), goal differential, goals scored. If still tied, same criteria is applied using games only among the tied teams. Then fewer penalty points (yellow = -1, second yellow = -3, direct red = -4). Then draw lots.

That was amazing! I did feel bad for the Thai women, though I understood why the US kept scoring.

They will have to get past France in the quarters to reach the semi's and finals and France is one of the top teams, if not the best team, and at home. But, when you can bring Carli Lloyd and Kristen Press off of your bench, you have a REALLY strong team.

What's more embarassing? Instructing your players to "play chase the ball" or just let them continue to score. Having been on both sides, the most embarassing is when you remove a striker (position 11) or other offensive players from the field and go 10v11 or 9v11. Had that happen a couple times in youth soccer.

In other sports where point differential is a very low tie breaker if at all, teams in blowout games often pull their top players to avoid injury and fatigue and give their substitutes playing time during "garbage time". However, soccer's limit of three substitutions and disallowing putting a substituted-out player back in makes this a less usable strategy, even in a match where goal differential does not matter.

@ucbalumnus That's conventional wisdom as well. I'm not sure how a head-to-head matchup figures into 538's statistical analysis, but France beat USA 3-1 in January. And 538 has France as #2.

DVRing all the games and came home from work a bit early to catch the US game this afternoon. I love international soccer, particularly women’s.

    I'm also DVRing every game.

Last weekend, I watched all of the games.

I have no problem at all with the score. The US has no way to know what the score of Sweden/Thailand will be and so had to continue to continue to score.

I also have no problem with the celebrations. Pugh's goal was her 1st World Cup, Lloyd's continue her amazing steak and Morgan tied the US record for goals in a game.

Pugh's mom was watching from Denver. She was happy to see her daughter score even though it was #11.
