HELP!!! Freshman daughter not getting sleep from dorm.

kpopmomrunnerkpopmomrunner 27 replies5 threads Junior Member
My daughter is having trouble getting sleep due to constant noise from drunk or rowdy students. She and other students already put in complaints about these privileged, and inconsiderate kids but still the partying and loud music continues even late or early in the morning. Since she's done what can be done and has reached out to school admin, do you have any tips to lessen the noise coming from the outside? She does not want to wear any ear plugs as she's afraid she will not hear her alarm in the morning or if the fire alarm comes off in the dorm (which seemed to happen frequently).

Play white noise to block out the noise. There are white noise apps, or tracks in a music app.

Can she apply for a place in a "quiet," wellness or substance-free dorm for next semester?

That was going to be my suggestion too. She can also ask to be moved before she leaves for break. My son is in a great situation this year, but he's worried about next year. So he's applying for Chem Free housing and a program house that's very small and very quiet.

If the institution has quiet hours and administration has not been responsive, have her call campus security every time the partying goes past quiet hours. Has she reached out to a VP of student life? I like the suggestion of the headband that @privatebanker described. So sorry she is experiencing this.

Welcome to college. It is a huge adjustment in learning to live with other students. I'd ignore any advice where you think that calling is going to quiet things down. When you have 400 students in a dorm, there is simply going to be noise.

There are headbands that she can wear that play white noise via Bluetooth. If earplugs work, just buy a bed shaker alarm.

Ear plugs and a watch with a vibration alarm. Many smart and digital watches (like Apple Watch) have that feature.
