Colleges extending 5/1 deposit date

Luckyjade2024Luckyjade2024 453 replies5 threads Member
Anyone know of any colleges that are pushing back the date to enroll and deposit, please post here.

This can help us all during this stressful time and hopefully provide more time for us to visit colleges before we decide.

Unfortunately many colleges are still focused on the immediate time and getting things going for this year's students who suddenly find themselves having to move up and switch to online. They are also dealing with issues like figuring out refunds on partial room and board, keeping all their workers safe etc. I just don't think they have had time to breath and think much beyond the immediate needs. My daughter was on break last week which got extended to this week and she goes online next week. Hopefully soon most schools will settle into the new normal in these crazy unprecedented times and they can focus on further needs.

I have not heard anything but realistically, I am not sure what an extension would provide. Few schools are going to have students on campus for the rest of the spring, so how would additional time improve decision making?

I definitely agree that it's going to be harder to pick schools without being able to revisit, but it's unclear that the additional time is going to add anything meaningful in the way of additional information.

Rotten turn of events for sure.

Quick question how will this work, let's say I am debating between 4 schools and Williams College in MA( just picked off the list) has a 6/1 deadline but my other three stick to May 1. I can see if I am self employed or being hit really hard from the shutdown moneywise but if that is not the case what do I do, pay a deposit may 1 to school 1 while hoping to see Williams and get a feel for it. While I think it is great for schools to do this unless 95% of schools go to June 1 what is the real advantage? Agree it will play havoc on the waitlisted kid. Are schools moving to June 1 hoping that gives more time for international kids and their parents to access where the US is at with the virus?

you can only deposit at one school. so if it is the May 1st school, you should withdraw from all others.

I think this year there will be many exceptions. We're in the same boat as are many other students whose schools have canceled admitted student events. I would look for many/all schools to move to June 1. The ones that don't will be shamed into it eventually.

@Luckyjade2024 I don't think it's illegal to double deposit on May 1st but if the school's find out they could rescind the offer. Some HS's might have a one final transcript send rule too. Then there's the ethical question.

@Luckyjade2024 Assuming you applied to school that uses Common App and I did mention the ethical dilemma. OP could double deposit but there could be consequences.

I agree depositing at 2 schools is somewhat ... not sure if I would say unethical, it is not illegal, after all colleges do it all the time , it is call a waitlist. My main point was unless 95% of the schools do it , move to 6/1 what is the advantage for the family deciding. I am on both sides of this as my son is waitlisted at Upitt business school.

RIT extended the regular decision deposit deadline to June 1. With the unknown on this health pandemic, I am thinking of deferral for my son's transfer. The health risk, economy and other factors are weighing on my mind especially if it becomes an online course for the fall 2020.

As posted elsewhere - FIN AID? With so many people laid off and out of work now and many more to come these colleges are going to be Overwhelmed with kids reaching out with changes to their finances. Schools will need to look to address some of that if they want to keep up enrollment. I already know of two families in the upper middle class range thinking of having their kids defer one semester.

So an extended date will help us and help the schools re-assess who, what and how people will be doing this

Also good luck for colleges getting end of the year grade updates for Seniors! I bet this won't be a requirement cause how the heck can you do that if they are not even there?

@chillout2020 , my understanding is any deposit you put down is non refundable , or at least is was before this year.

NACAC has a current list of covid-19 impacts by college. You can search by a few topics, including deposit date.

    https://www.nacacnet.org/news--publications/newsroom/college-admission-status-coronavirus

This is the same organization/website that will post colleges that still have openings after the deposit deadline. Typically that list comes out the first week of May, obviously this year that list will be delayed until early/mid-June (best case).
