Waxing and Waning of College Popularity?

There's a thread in College Admissions here on CC where the kids are listing where they're applying. I found it interesting although some things are just as you would expect: HYPSM are very well represented as are NYU, UChicago, etc. But there are some LACs that I think were more popular last year than it seems this year (Carleton, with only 2, struck me) and then there's Wesleyan, with 17 currently applying. And CCers (at least the ones posting on this thread) are applying to Yale far more than Harvard.

I know this is completely unscientific, but it was interesting reading during my tea break (now, back to editing!).
