Parents of the HS Class of 2013

edited January 2014 in Class of 20xx Community
My youngest DD went to Freshman orientation today. Since I'm on CC quite a bit for my older DD (who is a member of the HS class of 2010) I figured I would start a thread for my younger DD's cohort.

I've already figured out a number of things through trial and error with my oldest that will help the process with my youngest (isn't that always the case ;) and I figured there have to be others on this board with kids in this class (especially since 2011 & 2012 already have their own threads.)

4 years of posts could get a little long...

Rob, I can't believe you beat me to it. Guess we're going to get to know each other very well by the time they graduate!

    Ah, familiar names :)

Yeah, freshman orientation was today. It was pretty sweet: my older DD was there to order her transcripts & to pick little sister up; she ended up showing my younger DD & all her friends where there classes were.

I think the biggest thing I'm going to be aware of that I wasn't with my oldest is the SAT II's. I had no idea about them, and my oldest didn't take them when she "should" have. She didn't need them in the end, but it added a little stress to the end of Junior year.

Here's to the next 4 years...

Omg RobD and YDS, I'm a part of this family too. I had to reread the thread. Is this really for rising HS Freshman!!. Woot. Here's to another kid with a different path! Thanks for this thread!

I'm one with a high school class of 2013- last one! Wow will be in high school! Can't believe it. School starts after labor day. It goes so very fast doesn't it? He cannot wait until number 2 heads off to college in a year so he can be an "only" for awhile instead of the "youngest!"

Single mom and can't believe it!! Must admit I am a little nervous since I am doing this solo!! Oh well knowledge is power. We are in NYC and she will be in one of the Specialized high schools. To the poster who wrote about the SAT ll....You are so right. Those subject tests are very important. My daughter has to take Biology at the end of her freshman year. The school on their website advises students who want to take the subject test to do it right after they finish the course; that way the material will be fresh in their minds.
That said, I guess we are on a journey together. The key is to be organized. I will try to visit schools with her beginning next year....can't do all in one year because of finances.
Don't forget summer!!! jobs or enrichment programs even volunteering. All we can do is encourage them its up to them to make the grade. Good luck to all!

Attended the Freshman Parent Tea yesterday afternoon. It was very relaxing for me as I also have a Senior, but there was tension in the faces of those whose oldest were attending HS for the first time. The principal and administrators who spoke mentioned a few times "we know you're nervous about your child coming to the HS" but I'm not. I'm so happy that both my kids are going to be in the same school for a year; 1st time since my youngest was in 1st grade.

good to know about the biology SATII exam FriendlyElse; I was wondering about that as DD2 is taking Biology Honors this year.

    Another 2013 parent here :)
Son gets his schedule at registration tomorrow. Hope it all goes as planned...
He already has one SAT II down his belt. He did apply to keep it on his officail record and so far...it is there :)
I will have much more to share in the weeks to come. This is my oldest child and for the first time entering the public school system. The amount of paperwork for tomorrow is something! Never had to fill out that many pages!

Trying not to look too OCD, but my daughter is HS class 2014, so I'll just peek in on this thread until one is created for us :)

I have been visiting this site for over a year now and am so glad that i did start early. I have learned so many things. Glad I didn't wait until she was a junior or senior before finding out these things - she surely would have been behind the eight ball on some things.

Tried to help my nieces and nephews with their experiences with the knowledge I've achieved from CC.

p.s. - daughter doesn't know about my visits to this site - wouldn't want to scare her :)

    Hi sydsim :) and welcome.
I am also glad I found this site two years ago, I have learned soooooo much here!
Since neither my husband or I completed any schooling in the US, it is all very new to me and I learn as I go.

I feel really happy and almost elated today. Ds and I went to registration and there were no problems with scheduling! DS got all the classes he was hoping for! Imagine that!
He will be on a block schedule , A and B days, and his classes look like this:

    Spanish III
    Language Arts 10 Honors
    Biology Honors
    Human Geography for Life Honors
Physics Honors (which will probably be AP Physics B a month after the school starts)
    AP Calculus BC

DS in new to the school so there will be lots to learn.

Question about SAT Biology - are you supposed to take it after Biology Honors or is it better to wait till AP Biology is done?
Also - AP Human Geography - when is it best to take this test?

Might as well sign up here!!! I have an incoming HS freshman AND an incoming college freshman, D's that are 4 1/2 years apart in age and can't be any further apart in personality, interests, etc. Let's just say that they were blessed with different gifts - they are both great kids.

D2 has her HS orientation on the 2nd, and she is SO ready. I think she will do great since none of her teachers this year had her sister, and don't get me started about faculty unfairly comparing siblings. I think D2 was so glad to get out of MS because of that!

Hopefully we will all still be posting four years from now when our S's and D's go off to college.

DD2 hasn't had to walk in too much of DD1's shadow; we did a relo 6 years ago and are now in a pretty big district. She only had 1 teacher in MS that her sister did and this year it looks like she'll only have one repeat teacher (and quite frankly, she's close to senile, so I'm sure she won't remember DD1 :)

Last day of vacation is tomorrow. 1st day of Freshman year (and Senior Year for my oldest) is Thursday.
