I'm a little confused about the gpas medical school look at. I know there's your school's cumulative gpa, as well as your math/science gpa and your non math/science gpa. But there's also an AMCAS gpa where you include gpa taken during the summer or abroad with the grades you got in school. So do they look at your amcas gpa or your school's gpa?

Wouldn't the amcas gpa be more important because it includes all the grades you have earned, regardless of the fact that you have earned them from your home institution or not?

Medical schools see only two GPAs:

    1.) Your AMCAS GPA
2.) A subset of the AMCAS GPA, which is your BCPM GPA.

I have a different question. I know Rice will only let one of their students transfer 12 credits from summer classes taken at a different institution (they have different rules for studying abroad). But I usually take a bunch of summer classes anyways to take courses that i could take at Rice due to time. Will AMCAS let me report the grades that Rice won't let me transfer?

Not only will AMCAS allow it, they will mandate that you do so.

Let me see if I have this right. My son is taking a summer class at a college not his "home" institution. His home college will not transfer grades, only the credit. Are you saying that AMCAS will figure this grade into the GPA even tho it won't go into his school's GPA?

    That's exactly right.
