Can any Exeter students speak about the social dynamic at Exeter? Please?

Thanks! ^^

You're unlikely to get many Exeter students to respond right now, so close to the end of the term--they're really busy. But if you do a search, you'll come up with a bunch of threads that address this.

I'm assuming you mean if there are 'popular' people, cliques, posses, and other things like that?
Honestly, there are posses. But it's just a fair-sized group of (mostly athletic) students of the same grade that hang out together, so don't worry about it. They don't haze any students, and they do interact quite nicely with others.
Other than that, students do typically hang out with people from their clubs/sports/classes, because that's just the way you make friends!
But everyone here is generally very friendly. The first few days of school, I must admit, I was so scared to go to meals alone. Now, I do it without fear! There are many long tables at our dining halls, so you'll almost always sit with someone new each day. :)

Feel free to ask more if you'd like me to elaborate, I had to type this up quickly as @classicalmama was exactly right, we students are busily studying away!

You should be fine. If you have a single you might be a bit lonelier at the very beginning; as my roommate was my best friend the first week of school, but once you get to know people from your classes, sports, etc. the people are amazing! So much diversity; something for everything. Definitely not something to worry about!

There isn't really a group of "cool" kids at Exeter. It's more like, there are groups of people who tend to hang with each other more often then not, which are sometimes then considered a "posse" by other students. In the first few months at Exeter, you'll definitely end up meeting lots of different people, in your dorms, in your classes, in your sports team, and/or the people in the same clubs as you. Everyones really open and welcoming, so I wouldn't worry about anything. You'll definitely find a lot of interesting people with similar interests and goals!

I'm at Exeter right now, I just finished with Finals!!! So, about your question, socialness is HUGE here. The people are really nice, but as a prep the social scene is quite cut-throat. The first few weeks here I tried to just fit in, then I found a group of friends. Then in early October the groups start to become sub-groups. Of course for me I ended up liking this girl and spending most of the term flirting with her to no avail, so there DEFINITELY is a social scene that gives you even more stress than your school work. In fact, for me, I realized it was affecting my grades so I had to focus more on school. All in all though, it's a great place. I do tours, and on the tours everyone is shocked by how many people, be they Preps, Lowers, Uppers, or Seniors, know me and say hi.

Hello, thanks a lot for taking your time to answer my question! You all are very kind which makes me wanna go to Exeter even more! : D

@PieLover: Yay, you’re the first Exonian who responded to this thread! :D What kind of people do you hang out with? Do you mostly hang out with friends from your dorm /classes/team?
When you went to dining hall for meals, did you sit by yourself or did you join a group that you were unfamiliar with? Isn’t it a bit awkward to ask if you can sit with them for meals if you don’t know them? Or is it just that everyone is extremely nice AT EXETER?
What are some of the things you really like about Exeter?
Btw, do boys go to girls’ dorm more often, vice versa? Do you all study together? Are girls more friendly than guys at Exeter? Do a lot of students date? : ]

@Gapoc: Do transfer students get roommates or only preps get roommates? Are you and your roommate still best friends? Just curious. At what time do you usually go to bed? What about your roommate? During the first few weeks of class, are teaches less strict? How would you get to know people from your class if you all are having classes?! I’m asking very politely. : ]

@Cookiez4ever: I love cookies, haha! Is there a group of students that are considered as “popular” at Exeter? I can imagine trying to fit in… where nobody knows each other… I bet it’s quite difficult to adjust? Umm, which hall has the most athletic kids? I know my question is vague but I’ve heard most of the girls at Amen are athletic and so forth. Is this true? What’s really challenging about Exeter?
@PEA2016: I hope you’ve got to know a lot of people by now. Haha, I’m glad you are good friends with her! :D How much do you like Exeter? 0-10? Wow, sounds very interesting! I hope things will get better for you. Did you struggle a lot at the beginning? Any suggestions for incoming students?
    Good luck, buddy.

Well with meals, I usually eat with whoever is at the dining hall, or who I just had class with. First few weeks I spent a ton of time with people in my dorm, then as I started to get to know other people from sports and classes, I began to hung out with them.

If I don't go to dining halls during peak hours I do sit by myself, (like sometimes I eat dinner at 5:30, and there's literally only a handful of people there). During busy periods, I go to dining hall alone, but I always find someone I know to sit by. I don't usually go sit next to strangers, just perhaps other people I've encountered but never got a chance to talk with.

I think guys go to girls' dorms more often, but girls do go to guys' dorms all the time. We do study together, whether it be in the library or other dorms. I can't really generalize if girls are more friendly than guys. Surprisingly, a lot of students start dating within the first week of school! But then, those people quickly break up, and get to know each other better, before starting to date someone else. We have teas and Evening Prayer, where guys/girls ask someone out and they attend the activity together.

Sorry I didn't get to answer your question about what I like about Exeter, we just got back from Thanksgiving break, and there's already a load of homework. I'll get back to you soon, hopefully!
