Two Questions

Hi all,

As you can tell by the title, I have two quick questions that I'm hoping to get answered via the sea of knowledge that is CC...

1) I noticed that there's only space for an athletic and/or music recommendation on the Gateway special interest recommendation. What would you guys *recommend* an applicant who would like a recommendation from someone other than a coach or music teacher do (say a debate advisor or a community service supervisor)?

2) If an applicant plans on submitting a recording of a piece for the music department, how professional should the recording be? Shouls it just be audio or should it be a video?

Thanks in advance!

    1) I would recommend contacting that school's admissions. I assume that an email to them from your recommender with your application info would suffice. But check with AOs.

    2) I don't think it has to be too professional. As long as the audio quality is decent, you should be good.

For the music recording my kid's music instructor said to definitely do video so the schools could see how my kid plays. My kid used an iPad at home and then spliced the various videos to create the single submission for each school as each school had different specifications for the submission. It took my kid a lot of time to record each piece "just right". DH and I had nothing to do with this process as evidenced by a few things caught in the background that I would have preferred not to have had included, so just be mindful of your "set". :D

I appreciate the quick replies, @lusitari & @AppleNotFar. @AppleNotFar, how did your son/daughter find these specifications you refer to above?

Some were hard to find. Here's Hotchkiss and Exeter from their websites:

I'm having trouble finding Andover and Deerfield and my kid doesn't have specific recollection.

I remember that for Andover, links to video material had to be included on the application form. For SPS, music recordings had to be sent directly to Mr. Pandolfi. Each school's website has specific instructions for submission of supplementary materials.
