edited November 2010 in Prep School Chances
I am in 8th grade
I'm a girl
I am applying for 9th grade at choate lawerenceville deerfield and hotchkiss
I am applying for financial aid
My grades are high right now(they are all A- and higher), My seventh grade grades were good too.
I have lots of extraciricular activities:

Soccer:4 years on rec teams and travel teams
Basketball: 3 years on rec teams
Karate: 7 years
Ballet: 1 year
Choir: 2 years
Community Service: about 2 years through my church
Drama: just for a couple months now in a class

My teachers all like me and i am expecting GREAT recommandations.
My ssat scores were okay and I don't know if they are good enough to get me into the schools i am applying too. They are:
Math: 88%
Verbal: 80%
Reading: I did not do so good in reading and i don't know why because in the practice tests i did a lot better than my score now: 43%
Total: 77% which is okay but i wanted better
Essay: It was good. I think I did well on it.

Please tell me if I have any chance of getting into my schools!! :))

Ummm probably not...no offense but your reading score is egregiously low. The AVERAGE ssat for those accepted at Andover [and the standards for the aforementioned schools are similar to andover's] was 90%-yours is 13% below that. To be competitive, you should have scored in above the 85th percentile. Now, if you had some outstanding, or incredibly unique ecs...which you don't have [you don't really have LOTS of ecs, many applicants have a laundry list of extracurriculars, some of which they have taken part in for over 7 years]..then that might have overshadowed your considerably low ssat score. Moreover, you haven't seem to have won any awards [let alone NATIONAL awards]. So, combine the facts that you have a low ssat score, mediocre ecs, no national awards, and that you're applying for FA [which has a negative impact on admissions], and you have a VERY slim chance of getting into the schools you have mentioned. So, in short, no, you don't really have a chance.

FA doesnt have a negative impact on chances.... anyways.... yeah you might want to take the SSAT again D:

Umm..yes it does..schools aren't going to want to shell out superfluous money on a student. Depending on how much fa is required, they could possibly choose an applicant who is slightly less qualified, but isn't asking for FA. The only schools that are need blind are Andover, SPS, Exeter, and SAS [I think]. Even in "need blind" schools, FA still negatively impacts admission chances, despite what they say. Think about it scales-2 applicants with close qualifications...one requires 30k of fa, the other only needs 5k...which one do you think they will pick? Don't be so naive!

    What is a unique EC?

@middleschool8-You are incorrect about the "laundry list" of EC's. The maximum amount of EC's one can write on an application is 8, and this girl has six. She is, in fact, involved in them, one for seven Years. You should also keep in mind that more than 8 EC's will look fake in the AO's minds, being that prospectives also have 3-4 hours of homework to do a night etc...Lastly, not all prospectives have resumes like prospectives on CC. (You are correct, however, that the SSAT score will bring her lower into the "competion")

chuppybn-A unique EC could be Horse-Back Riding. The AO would like to see that even if You don't do it regularly due to financial "issues" because it is uncommon
