Are the differences between schools real ... or just a matter of reputation?
I think it's real. Some schools are so geographically isolated that it is really really and really hard to access alcohol and drug.

No school is too isolated, IMO, for drugs and alcohol. 1) Drugs are everywhere these days. Some of the worst drug issues are in rural areas. Every school, even 100% boarding schools, have kids from the area and faculty children that could be sources for info on who to buy from. 2) Students bring stuff back from breaks and go to amazing lengths to sneak things in and camouflage things.
