Rice University - Investment Banking Recruiting?

sammito1sammito1 Registered User Posts: 12 New Member
I'm thrilled to have been accepted into Rice yesterday. I'm hoping to study Mathematical Economic Analysis and minor in Business. I'd like to know, how does Rice IB recruiting compare with UT Austin - McCombs? I'm considering both, and I really love the atmospheres and college life of both schools, so the choice is really tough. So, to help with the choice, I'm gathering info on how the IB scene is at Rice, since I already know Texas has decent IB recruiting (non-BHP).

Plenty of Rice alums go into investment banking - often with Math Econ degrees. If you are deciding solely between Rice and UT based on IB recruiting, there is probably more at Texas. I would state that knowing what you want to do in four years sometimes changes, so I would take this with a grain of salt. You can certainly get a career in IB with both places, so I make a list of what is important to you and rank them and then rate Rice against UT in all the categories. I would also think if I found out that my offers to each school were rescinded, would you be more disappointed not be able to attend Rice or not being able to attend Texas?

Many of the top IBs recruit at Rice. Off the top of my head, Lazard, Goldman Sachs, and JP Morgan have or are coming onto campus this month, and it's not even peak recruiting season. You'll have absolutely no problem going into any of the top IBs from Rice, and I'm pretty sure more firms have offices in Houston than Austin anyway.

It is possible to get to IBs in New York though?

I spoke with a Rice alum about IB recruiting, and he said that NYC recruiting is nonexistent, but regional IB recruiting is top notch. They give the around the same number of spots to Rice kids that they give to UT kids, regardless of the class size, which is pretty impressive. So, if you're dead set on NYC IB's, it'd be tough to get in, and it'd be easier to do so from UTexas (assuming you were admitted to McCombs), but regional IB's favor Rice significantly.

I would double check directly with the best source of information - the Rice Center for Career Development.
