Here's a new thread for Rice 2023 RD applicants, as none seem to have been opened previously. Best of luck to all.

Do people plan to put yourselves in "the box" submissions at all? Maybe photoshopped into some other picture or using an actual photo with you in it...?

I don't know anyone who did that for ED. The Box is meant to get a sense of what appeals to you. They don't need to know what you look like...

My daughter applied RD back in August. Who else did such a thing? Talk about a long wait from start to finish!

Hi! I decided to apply to Rice sort of last minute. My application is done (essays), but since we're on winter break now, my counselor cannot submit my transcript or letters of recommendation until after break (January 2). This is one day after the application deadline. Would this be alright or should I contact someone at Rice admissions to ask about this?

I would contact them ASAP to confirm. You can also demonstrate your interest through this call.

When my daughter applied her letters of recommendation and transcripts did not arrive for a long time. As long as you hit the submit button on the common application you will have been considered to have met the deadline. The only things that you have to submit in time are those things required to make the common app take your submission. If there is anything missing Rice will contact you and ask for it. But conversely nothing in the common application can be changed after submitting it. At least this is what it was like a couple of years ago.

The deadline for the transcript and letters of rec is not the same as the deadline for the students. You are fine!

@2019id , My daughter applied Regular Decision in early August. Her "stuff" showed up accepted and checked off fairly quickly except for the teacher recommendations. Those stayed with an "X" even several weeks after the teachers sent them. My daughter wanted to give them "some time" and didn't want to email them even though I kept telling her too. In November, I started badgering her again about it. She still didn't want to email so she had the teachers resend their recommendations. Still nothing showed up. Finally, in mid December, I was worried that everything was due by Jan. 1 so I insisted she email them. Literally, within a couple of hours of the email, the "X"s disappeared and the recommendations were checked off!! I'm not sure if they were in her file the whole time and they just never updated the portal or what. I think as long as you are doing your due diligence than you shouldn't be penalized for waiting on teacher recs and school reports. Best of luck!

For the box, I submit a photo of myself which I think it's appealing... Is that a little odd or is it fine?

Edit: It is a picture of me jumping in the air for triple jump... Not a portrait!

I bet lots of applicants post their own pictures. It’s not original but not odd at all.

Does anyone know when Rice RD decisions will come out? I can't seem to find this info on their website. Thanks in advance.

The official line is by April 1. However, last year the decisions came out on Friday, 3/23/18 at 4 pm Central time. The class of 2021 found out on Friday 3/24/17 at 4 pm Central. If Rice holds true to form I predict they will come out Friday 3/22/19 at 4 pm Central this year.

S has his interview today. I'm excited for him to learn more about Rice as we haven't had a chance to visit. It seems like it has so much to offer. Not very excited about the RD acceptance rates though!
