applying for fly-in programs at Rice?

on Rice's website, it is emphasized that priority is given to low-income, first-gen, and URM applicants. since I don't fit in any of these categories, would it be worth it to apply? has anyone gotten accepted who hasn't fit in these categories?

Think about it: these programs are targeted to people who often have a very difficult time affording college, or who don’t have the support system needed to even go about applying to a college such as Rice.

A selective school like Rice is looking for diversity. If you are URM, first gen to college, and low income, that’s diversity. You are less likely to have the resources that many students at Rice are privileged enough to have. Is it fair to offer you a fly in if you fit none of those categories, at the expense of someone who might fit those categories, but not have the resources or family support needed to visit Rice?

There are essay questions you will have to complete, and those require work. Give it a shot, but don’t be surprised if your work is for nothing. Remember too, you can visit if you are accepted.

@FutureCadet Not all fly-ins require those to fit specifically into these three categories. Reed, for example, allows for ORMs to apply. Search for others that may apply to you.

The thread from last year might shed some light on your question. Persons who fit in the categories mentioned are the focus of Rice's fly in program. It is very competitive. https://talk.collegeconfidential.com/rice-university/2093458-soar-2018.html
