8.7%? Scary!! Well, at least UT Austin still accepts 36%, A&M 71% and UTD 76%.

8.7% was the overall rate. Has anyone seen the RD acceptance rate? I believe I saw 15% for ED.

If overall is 8.7% then RD must be lower, probably 5% and ED should be higher.

According to the Thresher, Rice accepted 408 of 2628 ED applicants and 1956 of 24,456 RD applicants in 2019. That works out to acceptance rates of 15.5% for ED and 8.0% for RD.

Do keep in mind that a fair number of RD applicants this year had no clue whether they were a good match for the university but applied anyway hoping to get free tuition through the Rice Investment. That made the RD field much less competitive than the ED field which accounts for the higher ED acceptance rate. (So it wouldn't be correct to conclude you have a 2x better chance to get in if you apply early.)

@ricegrad makes a good point. Of the 408 ED applicants accepted, 55 were Questbridge matches. Taking out the Questbridge students, the ED acceptance rate drops to 13.4 percent for the non Questbridge ED applicants..

    Isn't 13.4% better than 5% ?

Remember that generally recruited athletes and Questbridge all enter through early decision at basically a 100% admit rate. Rice is a D-1 school for athletics so that population is probably larger than you think at Rice.

The Thresher recently published an article that stated that 10% of the undergraduate population are student athletes.
